For a bait tank pick up for my Grady, to I face the slots toward the bow? Heard both directions in my research.

Thanks Steve

Toward the bow. The ram pressure from the boat movement will drive the flow into the tank. If you install it in reverse, there is a negative pressure that will tend to pull the water out of the tank. The pump of course will keep that from happening. My bait pump is close to waterline and does not prime most of the time. I put the boat in gear and the ram pressure drives the flow thru the pump and it primes.

Thank you all very much for the information. It was all very helpful.

As a follow up question, should I put some kind of epoxied/fiberglassed plywood on the inside? Something easier out there? I was looking a that fake wood exterior paneling at Lowe’s that might work…

Thanks Steve.

Because it’s a scoop/clam shell, I probably don’t need a backing board. Will 5200 so think that should be ok, right?

For thru hulls below the waterline I would build up the area with epoxy/mat thick enough that the screws used to hold the clamshell don't penetrate all the way through on the inside.

You could use 5200 but I would go with 4200.

I plan to put bolts, nuts, lock nuts and large washers.
if it's a bronze scoop strainer , don't use stainless fasteners ... electrolysis. it's also better to go with a thru hull separate from the scoop strainer. first it makes it easy to clean out thru hull if you ever need to , and if any thing were to hit the strainer like a trailer bunk, the strainer would not brake thru hull off. i've seen it happen more than once.

I'm a big fan of both through bolting and overkill but in the case of your strainer through bolting is really not needed. IMO unnecessary holes through the boat. Use bronze fasteners as Mattanza mentioned.

4200/5200 takes days to setup. When you install it leave the stem nut about a 1/2 turn loose for a day then go back and do the final tightening. That gives the sealant time to harden some and a little more of it will stay in place to seal instead of getting squeezed out. See, told ya I'm a fan of overkill!

I drilled holes in my pickup because it would kill my bait pump. There was too much water pressure against the pump impeller of my rule 1100. Once I relieved that pressure - no more pump failures
