I have not seen them in person, and cannot find any information on size difference, only comments on line capacity. Is the 15/30 a narrow version of the 20/40, or is it simply a smaller sized frame and spool? They both share the same internal mechanical components, to my knowledge, but the 15/30 has a faster retrieve at 5.2:1, while the 20/40 is 4.3:1...

Anybody know? Thanks.

The 15/30 and 20/40 are different frames all together. The 15/30 is narrower than the 20/40. So to answer your question, no it's not simply a narrow version, it just has a different design.

The 15/30 is the narrow version of the 20/40. They share all the same parts except the frame and spool. They both have a 5.2:1 gear ratio. I don't know where you came up with the 4.3:1 ratio for the TLD Star. The TRN100 and 200 have that ratio.

Thanks for the info on the reel size difference.

First, the Shimano websites says the TLD 15/30 and 20/40 have the same 5.2:1 drag ratio...but when searching for differences between the 15/30 and 20/40 I saw random comments and forum listings, of the 20/40, having a 4.3:1 gear ratio; it may have been a typo, or misinformation that continues to spread. Maybe the TLD 20/40 that were Japan made, if they are no longer, possibly came in a 4.3:1 model???

Here is the main reason I commented on them having different gear ratios.
