Starting to get tired of saying "just being on the ocean is awesome enough", for the last 4 BFT boat rides and I needed to actually catch some fish! Linz and I had a window on Wednesday for a little father/daughter fishing time. Unfortunately the conditions were not what I like to take her fishing in, but we gave it a shot. 4 foot short interval West swell, with wind gusting to 20 in the afternoon, sheesh! She crawled into the cuddy for the ride down from Shelter Island, crawled out looking pale just as we were arriving at the Rockpile. Not feeling well, but she toughed it out! Baracuda, bonita, and yellowtails wanted to die in the slop. Felt good to hear the reel sing and actually catch something! 6 sport boats eventually anchored on the two main highspots, we drifted off the Northernmost all morning long. Many double hookups on each drift. Caught two 18 pound yellowtail here on 25# test, big enough for working Linz over in her weakened state. "I can't both hold the rod and crank the reel, Dad!" About 10:30 AM decided we would head in, but a huge bird school and lots of surface feeders showed, and I tossed the minty fresh for awhile. Headed back towards the Coronados, and trolled once up the South Island with a halco and blue xrap. Only bonies on the halco, but 5-8# yellowtail would jump on the xrap over and over. Kept 3 bleeders out of at least 8 rats. Linz finally ate something when I was cutting fish in the bay. She is pretty tough! Feels good to make a report again. Looks like the North San Diego county is starting to get busy like just last year! I think the local tuna will go wide soon!
