Moreno Valley man killed in watercraft blast
By Priscella Vega
A Moreno Valley man was killed after a personal watercraft he was trying to start at a boat launch on the Colorado River exploded, authorities said.
Deputies with the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department responded to a call at 12:39 p.m. Friday for a boating incident at River Shore Estates in Earp, on the California-Arizona border.
When deputies arrived, medical staff from the Buckskin Fire Department and River Medical Ambulance were already helping the victim, identified as Juan Antonio Pineda-Flores, according to a news release.
Pineda-Flores, 48, was trying to start a personal watercraft that was still on a trailer at the launch ramp when fuel or vapors inside the vessel’s hull ignited, according to witness statements collected by authorities.
The watercraft exploded and launched Pineda-Flores into the water.
The man suffered lacerations high up on his legs, said Sgt. Jeffrey Cross of the Sheriff’s Department’s Marine Enforcement Unit.
Cross said officials do not think alcohol was a factor.
Pineda-Flores was taken to the La Paz Regional Medical Center in Parker, Ariz., where he died from his injuries, authorities said.
Such explosions are becoming more common with high temperatures and ethanol-based fuels, Cross said. Four similar incidents have occurred this season, he said.
“Ethanol fuel breaks down fuel lines and gaskets in engines, causing fuel leaks, and the compression of initial startup causes explosions,” he said.
Cross encouraged boaters to use blowers to ventilate engine compartments to help avoid such incidents.

But an increase in fuel leak explosions may be explained by correspondingly increased deterioration of fuel lines and gaskets caused by ethanol, as the article suggests.
True, but the larger majority of people do not inspect their vessels before launching and that can be seen at any launch ramp

Here is a thought, put less in the fuel as in leaving out the ethanol and charge us even more at the fuel dock For marine use. We currently pay all the road use taxes on fuel at the fuel dock plus a lil extra for the selling entity. I think the only negative would be less tow calls when the ball of corn syrup blocks your fuel line and the mechanics bills to correct the problems. We spend so much on additives to help with this issue it’s insane! Better stock up on Berrysmans B-12 as chemtool had a serious fire. Shortages are here already! Remember the “GOOD OL DAYS” when gasoline was just that…..Gasoiline. And yes I do itemize on taxes for the road taxes. its always about 100+ gallons. If available I would gladly pay more for less corn syrup! Why is it something so simple will never occur?

E-gas has been with us for how long now? Over a decade? The marine industry stepped up quickly to upgrade lines and seals to handle the ethanol. Also while I still see some hose not up to the task reality is people have had plenty of time to upgrade during maintenance. If your vessel blows up at launching you likely have not followed proper procedure - blowers and checking for fumes.

Also in the article they said alcohol was not a factor :D
