Every once in a while especially this time of year when it’s cold I’ll pop some thing out in my lower back snd be literally incapacitated, the last three days In so much pain I couldn’t even think about recovery but today I I remembered my physical therapy after breaking my femur a couple of years ago where they showed me how to use a softball to push against my sciatic in lower hip to relieve pain in lower back, I don’t do pain pills and last few days have been hell but after doing some stretching and this procedure There is finally relief. Anyone else of the old guy generation have this issue?

I use a new tennis ball to roll the hip on. When you hit that nerve, you sure as hell know it.

Being retired from law enforcement, sciatic damage is a presumptive medical claim because of the years of carrying a firearm on the hip. My best day ever was when our department authorized tactical rigs on the thigh.

My wife practices yoga daily. I’ve started stretching a little myself and it helps as a preventative measure. But, yeah, when that lower back/hip goes out, it’s friggin brutal.

yup, most of us framer/foundation thugs have it when we get into the 50s, sounds like we live in a parallel universe at times. back issues sure make me realize how important preventive maintenance might have been instead of the fuck it Im young attitude was

This guy is not a couch surfer.

Some of us wear our shit out and start paying the price at 50. I had a full hip replacement at 49 due to a life of surfing and other sports. Osteoarthritis can be the result of an "active" life.

Have you guys seen a picture of the OP? I doubt his weight has anything to do with it.

I find occasional use of an anti-inflammatory really helps

My wifes scitica was caused by weight. She lost 55# and it went away. Maybe your weight has something to do with it?
I know cutting out 90% of my refined sugars took away a ton of my "chronic" pain, I try for less than 15 grms a day of added sugar, cant always do it but that shit is poison that they keep pushing on us. that 15grms is still only half of what they say is ok, but its bullshit what the fda touts as healthy for kids

How many gms of sugar in a bag of churros? asking for a friend

Ha ha yeah I go off of 135 pounds after suffering ulcerative colitis for years, an active life I do lead though. Use it or lose it right?

No kidding, the surgery is gnarly, watch one online....

The results are amazing, I walked like an old man in my late forty's and was in constant pain. Post surgery, I was mostly healed at 6 weeks and was wading in the Kenai with my fly rod 5 months later! My surgeon is Dr. Mark Newman, the surgery was done at the Hoag orthopedic center.

Don't put it off, it is a life changer. Being fit really helps with recovery.

Another thing to keep in mind is to make sure you wear high quality shoes/boots with orthotics.... I recommend you see a foot doctor to make sure you get the right configuration of inserts.
This is another thing I wish they knew more about when I was younger. a trip to the good feet store is on my list when I get back to the states!! it all starts at the toes and works its way up the spine. Im not sure how the coconut that fell on my head/neck 15yrs ago will manifest itself but that will be a whole other thread for us older (reads: mature) guys. and my diverticulitis surgery Fd me up also 5 yrs ago so any gas build up I think uh oh here I go again. life is good!!!

I've dealt with this for over 50 years. The absolute best advice I ever got was from a chiropractor. He told me when I first feel my back slipping out, apply ice. Ice for 30 minutes, off for 30 and back on for 30. 90 percent of the time I'll be ok in a few hours. The main thing is ice within 5 minutes of feeling like it's going out on you. Stop the swelling asap.

I would suggest 2 things. First is a chiropractor. Shop around for one that "fits" you well and does the whole body in balance thing along with treating the specific problem.

Second thing is inversion. Years of fighting gravity takes a toll. Let those old joints, especially the spine, stretch the other direction for a while. If you can't hang upside down look for a chiropractor who has the equipment for lower back traction.

Ice ASAP is a good thing as LEC pointed out. The other thing thats always been good for me is stretching - especially hamstrings.

Like many I have no shortage of wear and tear/injury. Fractured pelvis, degenerated C6 (severely according to a couple radiologists) , torn discs, shoulder issues, minimum 2000mg ibuprofen daily for months and months etc. etc. The best thing for the maintenance of the wear and tear stuff is a good chiropractor in my experience.

Have you looked into a TENS unit? It's an electronic muscle stimulator that loosens things up. Looks like an iPod with different settings and wires with sticky pads to adhere to your body.

When my back went out a few years ago, the chiropractor lent me a spare as I couldn't make it back for additional sessions that week. Works wonders.

I posted a thread a while back about arthritis in my hands and since my wife took me to her chiropractor I am sold on this guy. Turns out its scar tissue after years of workin with these old claws, he’s been working at them once a week With nothing short of amazing results I finally let him loose on my back and neck three weeks ago and he’s loosened me up quite a bit.

I don’t have personal experience with weed but pain relief was a claim that proponents used to get it legalized for medical use.

Too bad the VA is way behind on this. My FIL would probably still be alive today had he been given access to cannabis. But no...instead they insisted he be on a high dose of morphine. Which ultimately killed him over the coarse of 20 years. My FIL only took maybe 1/3 of the dosage they prescribed, just to take the edge off his pain. Probably would have died sooner if he took the full dose they recommended. VA will deny benefits if they drug test you and you pop positive for weed. Unreal.
