Damn poachers. This dead Black Seabass was found by a diver(s).

Its also possible his tail was tangled on rope and the fish died. I doubt poachers would leave the fish in this condition. The meat looks like it was chewed on by other scavengers. They would either fillet it or take the whole fish instead of just leaving a head.

It looks like a natural death instead of poaching to me.

Yeah, I noticed that rope by the tail too but if you look by the cheek/gill area you can see a thin white rope/spectra. Might not be able to see it as well in the pic but they also had a video with showed it moving around. That's what makes me think it was shot. Just my opinion

Probably got tangled up in some line dumped in the water.

Shooting thru a gill plate on a fish like this is tough. The gill plates are like steel armor. I do see it in the pick, who knows? Big ol black-tail roped to kill it?

Here's the clip. Definitely tangled around the tail and shot in the head. Maybe after shooting it, found out it was protected and cut their line?

Hard to say that is a line from a poacher. If it was speared, you would see a metal rod on the fish. The line doesn't go in like that into the cheek if its from a spear gun. The line is usually attached to the end of the spear and not in the entrance wound. It can even be parasites that attach to the fish and feeding on it.

Poachers don't take fish this way. Most poachers also know the large black sea bass don't taste that good and is not worth a lot of money. Before jumping to conclusions, its best to collect more data. You can't really make a conclusion based on these pictures or videos.

it's obviously been filleted, if the fish got stuck on a rope and has been rotting since, the head would be in the same condition as the body. The rope was probably used to pull the fish into the boat and never taken off. At least that's what I see

    It was just an opinion.

Look up "slip tip". This seems to be the method that was used when this was speared. Definitely not a parasite.

    Here are some examples:

    Poacher:
1: one that trespasses or steals
2: one who kills or takes wild animals (such as game or fish) illegally

A poacher doesn't always mean they are taking the fish for a profit. I was referring to "one who kills game/fish" illegally.

Possibly. The fish had its slabs removed underwater. Clear as night and day. The rope is to secure the fish while slabbing out

I have speculations. Not sure though

Have a buyer. That's money. Some folks are desperate when it comes time to feed their family

Wonder how the SD back ponds, estuaries, golf courses, will handle the border crisis

Growing up fishing SD back ponds. Allot of illegal activity and camping in the bushes at our back ponds. Sketchy but they never messed with us, probably hid. Even gill netting the del mar rivermouth next to hwy 101. The fairgrounds stretch to the beach
