Wanted to start a thread to document the progress on my Davis Bahia. I am in the process of converting it to an outboard. All new electronics at the same time. Just removed the motor and outdrive today. Hopefully have the project finished by April!

I started with a Volvo Penta 5.7 with DP outdrive and all original electronics. Most likely going to repower with a Zuk 350 and all Simrad electronics.

Not hard just takes some time. I did my Cortez few years back. Have done several other in the past. Now I am doing a old Sea Bird and a Skipjack Fisherman. Any questions I would be glad to help. Kirk

Gauges removed.
Cleaned up the transom and removed all unnecessary hardware that went to the bait tank on the swimstep. Those holes will be filled.

included another pic of a better view of the tower. Done by PYT.

Also moved the boat into the shed for the winter. Didn’t know if it would fit but cleared by about 4 inches. Looks like I won’t be putting a radar arch on the new radar!

You will kick yourself for not doing this sooner!

Check your transom to make sure it is flat to accept your bracket. Mine had some warp and concave about 1/2 inch.

Suzuki uses a Simrad based NMEA network so upgrading your electronics with Simrad will make the installation easier. I love my Raymarine package with autopilot but splicing backbone cables works but is sketchy. Maybe there is a connector now available.

Simrad NMEA fuel level sender is networked in and can be displayed on your new MFD. The Suzuki C10 gage counts down and shows fuel used. Each time you turn the ignition key, the gage asks if fuel was added. This gives you a redundancy. My Df300 fuel calculations is 99% accurate. The Suzuki ignition is sealed; there are no studs to tap power for the typical fuel level gage.

Other websites have commented on some issues wth the Df350. The need for power assisted steering because of the torque. Also seals leaking and lower unit problems. My 300 has 510 hours in just over 2 years and has been flawless!

I loved reading through your project! I think Simrad is a good call. I debated between Furuno and Simrad and will save a few grand with Simrad.

I’ve done extensive research on the DF350. Seems like there are a few bad ones out there. But I think I could really benefit from the dual props and additional torque and horsepower over the 300.

Thanks, I hope my post was informative.

There is a learning curve to the NMEA 2000 networks. I thought all manufacturers were compatible...but NO!

Btw, the fuel level sender needs to be calibrated.

You don't need the fuel line pump like the old 2 strokes of yesteryear. The Suzuki will fully pull fuel and prime the system.

Keep up your posts

My buddy has a 26 and twin 200s were not enough. He now has twin 300s and it pushes it just fine.

I think there is only 1 Bahia with twin 300's. Do you know any details on his performance before/after? I had sent him a message but as I don't know him, did not expect a reply.

I have a Yamaha F350 on mine and wish I had gone with twins. It's not so much a horsepower issue, my boat has plenty of power, as it is having enough propeller surface area to carry the load in the midrange cruising speeds. The Suzuki 350 may help address that with the duoprop, I'm interested to see how it goes.

Harold recommends twin 250 evinrude G2s, I think for any of the manufacturers twin v6 250s or 300s would be fine. Another interesting option would be twin Suzuki df175s or df200s. Although they are 4 cylinder motors they are geared way lower than the Yamaha f200 and can turn a 16" prop so they should have plenty of grip.

Santa was good WOW. I put a permatrim on my boat and it made all the difference in that mid range and I also run a 4 blade prop. I normally running heavy with the commercial BS on the boat and all the ice that I need. I never liked those things but it really worked. My 2 cents. Kirk
