“What do you want to do for Father’s Day?” said the wife…
So we launch out of Dana point harbor around 9:15, generous “half scoop” of straight anchovies from the barge and off we went into the slop, (oh great, what did I get us into) made a slow “run” up to salt creek where the Dana pride and a few private boats were anchored up along the reef, found an open spot and dropped the hook, didn’t hold, do it all over again got it to stick 2nd time. Fished for 20-30 min couple bites, only one fish caught, short calico.
Feeling a little silly for dragging my family out on a crap day we pull the hook and start heading out and south, told the wife we might as well go home unless you want to run All the way down to Mateo Point… she bites, wind was starting to ease. Still a very slow and bumpy ride. Trolled rapala gets bit just as I’m pulling up on my favorite rock. 21” Barely cuda. Setup the anchor and son is bit before I can get my line in the water. Game on! Steady bite on small bass, even mix of calico and sandies then the cuda would breeze through every now and then. Tide peaked and the bite shut off. Put the rapala back out and made a few passes, hooked 3 cuda but none made it to the boat, drag too tight? Last fish we caught was a keeper bass on the trolled plug, go figure. Smoother ride home with a tired but satisfied crew (and capt). No fish kept to clean so off to Outback for steaks. I heard the fishing was tough, luckily I’m still batting 1.000 this year.
