After a few years of rebuilding my 1970 Skipjack 24 Flybridge I had it pretty close to done... done enough to fish and the bluefin were getting close. I live in the desert and Silverwood lake is the closest place to shakedown a boat so that's where I was going when some blind cnut ran a stop sign and t-boned my boat\trailer. I tried to buy a new trailer but it was a long wait. I thought about importing a few from Florida, that was the best deal I found. @towerfab is the best guy for that if your looking for a trailer IMO. I thought I could do it better and cheaper so I decided to do it myself. I'm a machinist and were always fabing stuff up at my shop, I think it turned out better in a lot of areas but it certainly was not cheaper.
I bought the I beams, they are 7in tall 3/8 web, 4.5in wide which is one or two sizes up from what a typical 10K trailer uses. Obviously not necessary but it wasn't a ton more. I built a press to bend them, I build hydraulic presses for one of my customers. There is nothing galvanized on this trailer, everything is stainless. I machined most of the brackets, everything for the bunks, steps etc. I don't have the guide bunks made yet but I'm not going out again without them. I'll post some pics of those when I build them, probably a couple weeks. Here area handful of pics, if anyone has any questions I'm happy to help with anything I can. My advice is not to build a trailer. . unless you have a bit of time on your hands, I would have rather been fishing.

I won't ask the exact cost....

But how much more do you think it cost? (%)
Apples to apples with a top of the line trailer, was the difference closer?

I have $13-15k in it. I spent a bit more on some things and saved a lot on many others. I bent the Crossmembers, I made the tongue (out of stainless) I made all the brackets, steps, vertical channels for bunk supports, backing plates, etc. Tires were $500, wheels were $80/ea. Materials are significantly higher today but they were high for the time when I bought them. Aluminum is over 25% more per pound today but that was a small fraction of the total cost.
