Decided to send it and chase the blues again. Took my best friend out to try and get him on his first tuna. He just came off of a shoulder surgery so he does not have high hopes of pulling on fish. We launch out of Long Beach at around 5 and get to Catalina around 6:30 and push about 20 miles past it. The weather was shit for a small boat so we put the mad macs out about 2 miles past the 499 around the spot we caught them last week. And with in 10 minutes we see a massive fomer start up about 100 yards off the bow so we speed up and it’s a good grade of about 50-80 pound fish. I bomb a cast right over it and reel my clear popper on the far edge of it and 1 pop later I am bit. No one els hooked up. Offered the fish to my friend but he didn’t want to take it cus of his shoulder. 8 minutes later put a solid 50 pounder on the boat. That was almost too easy to get the skunk off the boat. It’s only 8:40 at this point. We see another fomer but nada put the mad macs back out and 20 minutes later we are bit on the purple and black mad mac. This time my friend hops on the fish and finger it in the rod holder after about 8 minutes he gets it to the death circles. We tell him to rail the rod to not hurt his shoulder and 8 more minutes another 50 pound bluefin on the deck. He eats the heart and for the rest of the day we chase around a few fomers and troll around. Nothing els wanted to play. Went in with beautiful weather

Also we ran 2 treble hooks on the mad macs and it worked well same action the one caught on the mad mac had 5/6 hooks in his face forget single hooks. We had to cut these out of him.

For those who don't know ..... a 27% BETTER hook up ratio....running a short shanked double stainless Mustad hook on the center ring.... no swivel needed. Points out. Don't forget the tie wrap around the shank.... after sliding it on... for insurance. This from 10s of thousands of hours trolling and logging catch and hookup ratios. Try it....you'll like it. Good luck.

So use tandem hook up front with the points facing forward ? Tie wrap means zip ty ? More clarity would be great for my slowness.

Great report and pics and NICE TUNA guys. Glad your friend caught his 1st bluefin, ate the heart!!
Your friend is too young for shoulder surgery already. I've had 8 since 2008, on the mend again.
Let him heal up some more and enjoy some sashimi. LOL LOL
