Check out the amount of container ships off Long Beach Port & San Pedro on the ship tracking app- There are now ships all over the front side, and west end of Catalina. There are also another 6-8 out in front of Dana Point. WTF. What a nightmare! Night time navagating around those ships just to hoop at CAT sucks.

They're working the Union "Max" 6.2 hours per day. What do you want from our guys? Next thing you'll be asking is.... will we work 6 days a week? Now I support organized labor.... to a point!! But were in trouble here! Teamsters and truckers as well. Extraordinary times call for Extraordinary solutions.

There's over a half million TEU's (Twenty foot equivalent units, 8'x8'x20') floating out there.
Two per truck, that's 250,000 truckloads.

Vincent Thomas Bridge....etc your right. They can't fix that fwy fast enough as it is. If they start the "new" lanes now.... it will be complete as they empty the last container ship....lol.

It's a labor shortage across the board. Not enough crane operators, class a divers, etc. etc. Seems like for years companies where trying to do more with less and now it is biting all of us in the pocket book.

And the regulations commiefornia set for the trucks. 99% can't enter the state. And has to unfortunately be union to drive these containers. It's 100% caused by leftist regulations.

It’s the result you get when you give people a bunch of money and then tell them to stay home and don’t go to work. Our current president did just that. Now you have people with money in their pockets that would like to spend it but nobody is working to provide the services that make things happen.

And anyone who suggests that capitalism would solve the problem is told that Americans are spoiled and we shouldn't expect abundantly available goods at competitive prices. There is a thinly veiled move afoot to hobble capitalism to the point that socialism/communism doesn't look that bad. But you won't hear about it on the mainstream media. ZERO explanation of the causes of this problem.

The next generation won't believe the old timers who tell stories of being able to buy whatever you want, from multiple sellers, pitting one against the other for the best price possible. No lines, no quotas, no shortages. Supermarkets overflowing with all sorts of food. Auto dealers with lots full of unsold cars, willing to do anything to get you to buy one -- zero down, free financing, factory rebates, some dealers even eating bugs. And on the flip size, anyone could start a business, get investment capital without much trouble, negligible inflation, lots of people willing to work hard for good pay. All the benefits of capitalism that are totally lacking in any planned economy. As if any government anywhere, ever, were any good at planning anything, except keeping themselves in power. And our current crop has mastered that.

They're the problem. The unions won't let the ports run 24/7, won't allow them to automate to speed up unloading. Not enough drivers because people are lazy fucks any more plus Calif won't allow trucks in the state that don't meet the crazy pollution controls so truckers won't come into Calif. There's a lot of problems that add up to the floating warehouses off our coast. Maybe look at the ships as FADS and fish around them for yellowtail making a problem into an advantage.

Many reasons why we are in the current situation.

The last administration sent checks out as well. They also did a poor job of calming people to minimize their fear. Doesn't matter if the fear is well founded or not. Minimizing the fear helps keep the ship on course.

Dre hit on a major factor. Corporate greed. The truck drivers serving the ports of LA/LB were made independent contractors a few years ago. The employers made more money on the back of the drivers. Now the job market favors employees. You think the drivers who got the shaft a few years ago are going to come back for more abuse? No.

All this speaks to problems that have been building for decades. The decline of the middle class has many facets. One of the big ones is that same corporate greed. Employees at many places have been getting squeezed for a long time working hard but never getting ahead. All the while many of the same companies profits increased along with executive salaries. Now people have gotten some perspective being away from their normal work environment and have come to the conclusion that they want something better than being treated the way they were. They will not be going back to the same jobs unless they will be treated better. After sucking shit for long enough they have come to the conclusion that their current employer will continue to treat them poorly. They won't be going back.

Maybe this has a little something to do with the problem.

    The incompetence is unbelievable.
    It isn't all bad.

State officials even sent $21,000 in benefits to an address in Roseville under the name and Social Security number of U.S. Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.), some of the $2 million in total fraudulent payments that were sent to that same address.

And to think, CARB is all over the sport boat emissions - but we can have 100 plus container ships running 24/7 off So Cal - perfectly acceptable..... however every diesel boat needs to upgrade their engines

CARB is dealing with all sources around the ports. Its not like they are singling out sporties. The ports of LA/LB starting working on the pollution from ships a long time ago. Limiting their speed to move more efficiently and slowly plugging them into shorepower while they are at the dock.

Who thinks the current situation in and around the ports is perfectly acceptable??

Certainly ILWU is part of the problem. Nothing new about that. I don't know the details but they have agreed to run longer hours. There was even some activity at local 13 this past Sunday morning. I have heard rumors about longshoreman not getting vaccinated at a very high rate and having a pretty high sick out rate. Don't know how true that is just the rumors going around.

As far as trucks there is only a shortage of drivers not trucks. Plenty of trucks sitting around - not only in CA but all over the country. Nothing to do with CA emission standards. The companies that have be doing the best with logistics are the ones who employ their own drivers and treat them well. Imagine that! The logistic companies who serve the port are on the other side of that coin. They have treated drivers like shit for a long time. No wonder they can't compete for drivers in the current situation.

It will be fine. By the time the containers get in to the port, we would be ready for next year's Christmas celebration. Plenty of gifts by that time.

The real problem is the shipping costs has gone up from around $3200 per container to $17,000 per container in just the last year. There are few empty shipping containers in China since they are all stuck on ships or in America. Everything will go up just with the additional shipping costs. I noticed some products on the shelf has already doubled in prices, especially in the Asian supermarkets. Supply and demand economics at its finest.

    Let's go Brandon!

Greed is good. It motivates people to deliver the best product for the best price. If one party is charging a price that creates a big profit, others are sure to follow. In my business, development of industrial real estate, the successful strategy has been to build quality buildings, lease them up quickly by charging bargain rents, refinancing to recover the cash investment, then go on to another building. The motivation has always been to make as much money as possible, but in a competitive economy that means delivering the best product at the lowest price. Taking advantage of short term anomalies in the supply demand balance is not good long term strategy.

I totally reject any suggestion that the problems associated with the port are the fault of corporate greed or anything other than stupid governmental policies and regulations. Paying people not to work is the dumbest one of all.
