Confused on split ring and swivel sizes

On my last trip, 2.5 day 5/13-16, I toured the rod racks, port and starboard, checking out the different rigging methods used for the knife jigs we all had rigged up. I swear, no two anglers used the same method. Personal preference is what I saw and most of them looked like they would work. Most used a swivel somewhere, top of the leader and/or bottom of the leader.

Again, not convinced that swivels are needed.

Not trying to convince you just would liket to point out swivels are primarily used to prevent line twist. Any fish that has the ability to INHALE a 400 gram rip roller has the ability to twist the shit out of your line during an epic battle. Not to mention most jigs are designed to roll, flutter etc which will also contribute to such. My 130 JB spectra cost me $200 I prefer to keep it untwisted

I’ve fished a lot of jigs, and there is some line twist, especially with the fast retrieve used for YoYo iron and Wahoo jigs. I find it hard to believe that a jig such as the Rip Roller spins in one direction only. As for a fish, any fish, spinning and twisting my line, don’t buy it. We’re talking specifically here about Bluefin and how they react once hooked. They can be tough to land, making those head shakes etc.

As I said, personal preference plays a big part and if an angler wants to use a swivel it can be attached anywhere in the rigging, top end of the bite leader, at the lower end where it’s attached to the jig. I even see single or treble hooks attached to the bottom of the jigs with swivels. I’m just not a big believer in the need for one.

im using split rings so i can easily change jigs on the same rig without retying.

AND... not having hooks permanently attached to each jig. Waste of hooks (IMO), and time rigging hooks to each jig.

I'm a fan of the "figure 8" to a 200-250 lb split ring. Again, easy to swap out jigs fast, no need to have all your jigs pre-tied with hooks, and makes jig storage so much easier without hooks poking through your jig bag.

With a BKK t-rex treble would be the ticket. A bit pricey but what's not anymore

Stock hooks on your Rip Roller? I pull tested them, 60#. But I’ve been advised to discard them if fishing the bigger size Bluefin.

My pea brain was thinking since mustad makes the rip roller they would put decent assist hooks since they have the ability. If I remember they are a hook manufacturer. Not stating the best hook company, but they are known to get the job done. The bottom hook I added is a mustad also but the $5 stainless steel variety. I might have to take your thought into serious consideration. Thanks for the input

I know Mark on the Pacific Voyager likes the big Kaiju hooks. BFT open their mouth and inhale the jig, the size of the hook doesn't matter much so give them a big one!

1: do you think the hook patterns mess with the action of the jigs ?
2: what split rings do you have on the jigs?

I am tempted to switch to a Bkk 5/0 treble, then put this assist on yhe top. Always looking for a better way to skin a cat

Thank you. It just confuses me on all the different ratings. If a split ring is rated for 100 lbs of pull but the max drag on a reel is 33 lbs logic would dictate that any split ring over the top shot strength should be fine. And for the leader I 100% understand it’s all about abrasion resistance.

Steve, here ya go. Yes, that hollow core Kevlar, 400# looped through itself around the figure 8, then to the hooks.

Steve, you tie/crimp to the small hole so the ring/hooks don’t hit the knot. They have them with a 3 rd ring too.. tie/crimp up top, hooks on big ring in middle, split ring to jig on bottom.

#10 Ultra splits and the jigs are so heavy doubt any interference of action if there is any
