I am in Newark Airport heading for Icy Bay Lodge, AK for coho with fly rods and spinning rods.

I am bringing three new light 8'6", 9' and 9'6" Black Hole spinning rods to test them for coho.

Weather looks fine and coho are there.

I have no idea what kinds of lures work for coho. I bought some lures at a local tackle shop

Lots of charteuse and orange would be my first choice.
Blue fox in silver blue, chartreuse, orange.
Local lures that work great are Kodiak custom spinners.
Mepps spoons in no3 also work great.
Also do t forget about wiggle warts, basically anything with lots of vibration and color/flash.
I would not worry too much about catching in Icy Bay, those are some pretty remote , deep pocket guy areas with a lot of fish- if you can’t catch them there you won’t catch them anywhere.

It looks I have right lures. :)
Thanks for the info.

Hope you got 'em.
Just got back from Yak 10 days.
Tough fishing because the Situk is running at historic lows, (35cfm when we left) but we were able to eake out limits every day on the lower river at the high tides.
I've never seen weather like this at Yak, usually 9 days of rain and one day of sun, complete opposite, we had 9 days of blue-bird skies and one day of rain, it even got up to 77 degrees at the 9 mile bridge one day.
The ocean was very kind to us, got our halibut both days up to #90. The gals did well. Also got our Lings up to #30.
Lures and jigs we used were Blue Fox #5s in pink and rainbow blade and our home tied maribou 3/0, 3 1/16oz round 26 Gamikastsu jig heads in pink, black and chartrues with flash.
The spinners worked best however, because the pinks were so thick we couldn't use the jigs because we were snagging them so bad, maybe one out of ten or more to silvers bit.
Sure hope they get some rain up there soon.

We are having great coho fishing here.
Water level in the rivers are low and we are fishing in the mouths of the rivers. I used prototype 9' Black Hole rod rated 1/4 oz - 1 oz. I thought the rod is a little weak but I am convince it is not after landing 50 coho with it.
I even landed coho on fly rod. :)
Our group has 9 anglers and we the only group within 60 miles.

Wifi at the lodge was down last 4 days. I am flying to Seattle.
It was just fabulous coho fishing.
I had 29 coho on a fly rod and 40 coho on new 8'6" Black Hole rod rated 1/4 oz - 1 oz yesterday.
They say coho fishing in the rivers are better, but I prefer to fish from the beach

Just flew out myself Wednesday from Beluga Lake area Bear/Moose/Fishing fly in trip. WIDE open on silvers. Caught a few first stop with Pixies and Vibrex then fly rod time. A few on the 5wt (tough to control fishing current) but rest on 8wt. All in 4 to 15 pound range.
DSCN0500.JPG
Literally full throttle action. Lost 2 flies entire trip. Fished mid day (2 hours) between hunts and landed over 60 plus for 5 day period at that camp. While waiting for weather to clear last day caught 20+ in 3 hour stretch and then float plane came for me and left them bitting. FSCN0544.JPG

I bring home two boxes of vacuum packed fillet of coho and not frozen salmon egg ( ikura). They were caught from the ocean.
As you know, taste is gone when caught in the rivers.

You caught all your fish on the beach in front of the lodge?? I would rather fish the beach also, Joshua loved fishing in front of the lodge with you. I just showed Joshua your pictures and now he's mad at me, For me and Josh not going up with you on your trip :Beat_Them. I'm Glad you had a great and safe trip . P.S, How big was the fish laying on the beach with seaweed on it?? Did you have any problems while fishing near the lodge with bears wanting a little salmon for themselves:deadhorse??

Bear is a big concern to fish solo. :) I had bear spray with me.
Coho were caught on the left of the lodge.
While other group went coho on a vehicle, I decided to stay at the lodge while fishing and working computer. But There was no wifi service.
I had about 20 coho and missed a lot while fishing near the lodge.

Most coho was about 8 lb - 15 lb.

Fishing has been awesome this year but I knew it was going to be good at Icy Bay, pressure is minimal over there and it was a good year.
Very few styles of fishing beats fly fishing for silvers or even chum on the ocean shore or from the bow of the boat. If they are aggressive sometimes you can coax them on small poppers used for pike or chub.

I thought salmon are not hungry and they hit lures as reaction bite. But I was wrong. They chase Blue Fox #4 lures aggressively. I am also impressed with the effectiveness of flies.

reds (sockeye) are about the only salmon that wont actively seek out something to bite when they are in the river. Although plenty of reds get caught on small shrimp flies and people back troll for them as well on the kenai to search for the willing biters. People sometimes catch reds in the ocean trolling for other salmon as well but they are harder to catch because there generally are eating shimp and smaller prey that are harder to imitate while trolling.

The trip is finally over.
I am in NJ now.

In retrospect, coho salmon fishing on spinning rod and fly rod are very enjoyable and fun in relaxed atmosphere.
The Icy Bay Lodge is top class lodge and provides everything with excellent guides, food and lodging.
The lodge is located in remote areas off Yakutat, AK.
So only quests of the lodge can fish there.
Sometimes, I was fishing alone. The only concern was bear and I carried bear spray.
As the water level of the rivers was low, we fished from beaches protected in the bay. Actually I prefer to fish from the beaches for fresh coho. There were lots of salmon and I could catch 50 plus salmon every day.

The choice of lure was Blue Fox Vibrax #4. It weighs only 8 oz, but I could cast pretty good using prototype Black Hole light rods.
I am pretty new to fly fishing. But coho were everywhere and I could catch 29 coho on fly rod on the last day.
Now, I want to try steelhead on fly rod out of Yakuta in the next spring. :)

The background is Saint Elias which is the second tallest mountain in Alaska.
We were very fortunate to see the full view of the mountain as it is rare.

I really enjoy your trip reports, that fishing looks too good. When I fly to Anchorage I always sit on the right side of the plane hoping for a clear day, the view of the Fairweather range and Wrangell-St. Elias national park are incredible.

Just imagine what it would be like if there was a paved road leading to these fishing spots. The only thing protecting them is their remoteness.

Glad you were able to experience the kind of fishing I came to Alaska over 30 years ago to find. Definitely not like this all the time but on some days you feel like you really are in heaven.

Icy Bay Lodge is a special place for halibut/ling cod or for coho.
I thought the coho trip is the first and the last trip as Sept is the prime time for fishing and I rarely can find time for coho.
But I changed my mind. I might do it again next year as coho fishing was so much fun. :)
Salmon egg ( ikura) I brought is very tasty and they want more. :)
