I'm looking for a new grouper reel so I need something with as much drag as possible (40lbs+) I'm leaning towards Mak 20 but I was wondering if there were more affordable alternatives which can produce as much drag. Thanks

Sold my Parker. You can find me on the Red Rooster.
If you really need 40# of drag, you need an all metal reel and those just aren't cheap. In addition to the Mak, you might look at an Avet HX Raptor. It's smaller and lighter han the Mak 20 but has plenty of line capacity and a ton of drag.

I'd get the Mak or Penn before I ever buy another Avet.

One of the things I've seen guys do here in the Gulf is just lock down the reel and accept that it may blow up. One charter captain uses a two speed Beastmaster with 80# braid.

40# of drag is pretty close to locked down anyway.

For this ones like this only a bandit will do... http://dolphindocks.com/gallery/past-catches-2010# Look in the second row of thumbs.
