Replacing the leaking hydraulic gear pump that controls my gps/autopilot Seastar steering. West Marine hydraulic fluid is $20 to $25 a quart...Similiar fluids at Pep Boys are $7 to $10. Is there any good reason to pay twice the price for the fluids?

There should be a mil spec for it. As long as it meets the spec for temp and viscosity it should be fine.

I havent messed with steering in a while. Im sure someone will chime in.

Then again, is saving $25 worth it? Plus, I think WM is cheaper then actual Seastar Fluid.

I like West Marine but the prices there on many engine/mechanical related fluids are overpriced.

If your fluid is clear get some dye. The Deere dealers sell some. I picked up red and it shows quickly when there is a leak.

The Shell Aero 4 is on the list of recommended fluids in the online Seastar manual, along with a suggested mil spec of H5606. Now, I am on the right track..Looks like fluids used in aircraft pumps are top of the line in reliability....price is certainly good..Thanks..

Go to a regional airport maintenance shop. The red stuff is the same mil spec, and easier to find leaks with.

If you are in long beach you might go buy it at Fischer oil on the west side and buy it in bulk for a good price I purchase all my oil needs there.

I know Castaic Marine uses transmission fluid when they work on hydraulics.

FYI found this for $28 a gallon plus $14 to ship to my house for 2 gallons. For that price I just wanted extra even though I know 1 gallon is plenty. They have a warehouse in Corona, CA and it's red dye so you can find leaks easier.
