I am lucky enough to go to Cedros Island in 3 weeks, so I am going over my tackle.
How heavy should I go as far as line? Right now I have 30# and 50# braid in my bait casters and planning on putting a short 30# topshot for Calicos.
Is that suffiecient or should I kick it up a knotch?
I plan on throwing swimbaits and hard baits.

I also have reels with 65# and 80# braid but no when targeting Calicos

What rod/ reels? I would go 65 lb braid to 40 flouro for calicos and 80lb braid to 60 flouro for yellows. What trip are you on? I'll be there the 6th-10th.

    I brought set ups. 2 Curado EJ 65# Spectra/Top Shot with 40# Flouro/Curado 300E with straight 25# Mono/Trini 16 with straight 40# Mono

The Calicos are not line shy! I was throwing straight braid at times cause I didn't want to retie on a leader as it got short from changing baits. They eat everything but seemed to like Red Flake when I was down there last month.

YT have shoulders down there. 40 should be perfect. They were on the mint real good and bird shit colors. You most likely will end up bringing more gear than you need but be carful cause they charge per Kilo anything over 50 pounds. Have a great trip! I want to live there.

Last year used my Revo Toro 50 with 65# braid to 40# Fluoro...by the end of

each day I was straight tying right to the spectra after cutting off and

retying my baits all day...the calicos down there are NOT line shy...

This was with my custom Phenix PSW 808mh...killer setup for the checkers

down there...My pops even landed a 25# Jurel outside of the kelp with this

setup....Im super jealous...cant wait to hit it next year!

    PS. "Melon" is the shit!

I was at Cedros in the beginning of June. 50lb braid is fine. I used 30lb and 40lb leader. After a while I went with straight braid as well. I used reeb lures and hammer swimbaits browns, reds lots of sparkle 5 to 51/2 inch in size and even a wax wing of two.
My friend Just Steve post a report see below for link. Good Luck you will have a great time the fishing at Cedros is phenomenal.

I was there last month and fished straight 65 lb braid for 4 days. One with green braid and the other white. My firends I fished with had floro leaders and we all got bit the same.

Lots of quality there. Lock your drag and pull hard!

Curado 300, 50 or 65 braid with a shock leader of about 2-3 feet of 60 or 80 lb mono.

For the ultimate top water explosions get some of the large MC weedless swimbaits and Owner weighted hooks and hang on. The blue grunion, red flake and wounded soldier colors seem to work the best! MASSIVE explosions and bass TORPEDOING through the kelp to eat those things. BIG lures BIG bass! When the current starts to roll and the kelp starts to lay down, you are going to have the most EPIC Calico trip of your life!
