I don't think that there is a bad place to stay on Catalina. Pick your price point. A great town to walk around. Do the usual tourist things, like ride the glass-bottom boat and take the bus tour back into the interior of the island. Renting a bike can be fun, or a lot of work, it depends on how fit you are because everything from the beachfront goes uphill pretty quickly. I prefer the bus tours.

The restaurants are all good, and priced like the better restaurants on the mainland. Gorgeous views. I've taken my wife over for a long weekend about every eight to ten years, and just smile and do whatever she feels like, including hanging around tourist curio shops for much, much longer than the five minutes that I feel like. You'll rack up major "good hubby" points and she can make all of her neglected girl friends jealous.

Bluewater Grill is a good spot for lunch/dinner. If you want to go all in for her birthday dinner go with the Avalon Grille - pricey but good.

Take her to Lover's cove with a loaf of bread. Make breadballs and chum up 3-5lb calicos within viewing distance from shore. Ahhh, romance!

Mi Casa is good Mexican food.

Descanso Beach Club a favorite in Spring and Summer.

Hotels are getting better. Some were a little dodgey and run down a few wars back but the Island Co. has been renovating and encouraging renovations the last few years and there are some great places and almost all are very close to anything you would need.

If you are into snorkeling, watch the “submersible” as it heads down the beach. At one of the small points there is a large flat rock visible from shore. This is one of the 2 locations they release the feed to bring in fish. It’s a swarm every time of huge calicos, sheepshead, and other various critters. It’s about a mile walk, but well worth it if you like the underwater view.

One of my favorite spots to eat is towards the campgrounds across from the golf course. It’s a small Mexican joint that has good food and margaritas by the pitcher and a patio to enjoy it all on. Sorry, I can’t recall the name.

I've stayed in several hotels but my favorite is Hamilton Cove with a complimentary gas golf cart which you can explore all the hillsides and town with instead of paying $30 hour for a cart in town. Winter is very different than summer. During late summer especially you can snorkel at Lovers Cove in 70 degree plus water and feed giant calico bass and other species by hand. An old time favorite restaurant is El Galleon on the malecon which has a fun atmosphere, red leather booths, steaks and seafood. Take a bus to Two Harbors and a Catalina Express boat back to Avalon to see more of the island including bison. You can also charter a boat and go fishing and cook the catch in your condo. Have fun.

Looks like the weather is going to be nice so 3-4 days of just kicking it will be fun for the wife and myself

The Sandtrap! They also have dollar tacos from 2-7, can't beat it. As for dinner, Bluewater Grill is my personal favorite, with Lobster Trap behind that. Some will ague for Steve's Steakhouse as the best as well.
