Yesterday, I went fishing with my friend and his kids. The kids had never fished in the ocean before or even caught a fish. I take them to Catalina for some bass and blue perch to pull on and visit Avalon for lunch. After getting tired of small bass and blue perch nibbling the frozen squid, I ask them if they wanted to continue on small fish or bluefin. Without hesitation, they respond bluefin. Continuing where we left off last time, I had my friend drive the boat from Churchrock out to the 3 mile boundary and follow up the line, while I set up the new Magbay lure and tested it out, I also want to test the stainless planner but didn't have the time. We trolled up to Farnworth bank and back down, got 3 hookups, 2 landed, and lost one at the boat. The kids took turns reeling in the 3 hookups. I was the gaffman for the day. Although it's really lucky for us, I'm beginning to doubt that this is appropriate for the kids.
I am sharing this for anyone that is fishing the backside of Catalina might consider putting in a couple hours trolling if fishing is slow this week.
:troll Madmac 200 yards back and Magbay MacTrak 150 yards back.
:Madmac got 1 hookup 1 big fish, Mactrak got two hookups (lost a big one at boat and landed a small one.
"Bite time around 2:30 to 4:30pm
:lots of kelp in the water that will get into the lure.
:got all hooked up trolling down swell (don't know if it means anything)
:troll speed is around 12-15 mph
Happy Trolling
