Hi All,

First fish report, here goes...

Picked up a new boat a few months ago and have been doing a little local fishing, but I've been itching to get over to the island and go after some WSB or Yellows. Finally managed a free day with no plans and rounded up a couple of friends from work, one who brought his 9yr old boy.

Headed out of cabrillo about 6:30, and cruised into Avalon for some squid from the Mary Claire. Dropped the hook around the back of the east end and tried our luck on the WSB. No go unfortunately, so after a few hours we decided to grab some lunch during the tide change. After lunch, we posted up around the corner from Avalon and found a nice sheephead bite and kelp bass bite going on! Ended up with 7 Sheep (Biggest about 10lbs.), 2 Bass, and several perch and macs caught by the kid (Released). Fun day!

Did you and your crew get any new Thumb Piercings that day?

I heard that if you hold a Sheephead very close to your ear... it will whisper sweet nothings.

Nice catch BTW :)

That sheep had already had a solid whack with the Fish Be Cool stick and a nap in the ice box. Pulled him back out for the pic. He wasn't taking any thumbs.

Water temp was 61 on the backside, 63.5 on the front.

New DFG regulations says you can't fillet sheepshead, only gutt and gill. I recently learned this from a captain.

I wasn't aware of that regulation. Thanks for the heads up as I've fillet a few sheepshead on my last few trips. Ooops!

Great job on the goats.

I'm pretty sure you can still fillet Sheephead on a vessel.

Subsection 27.65(b)(10) allows for the filleting of Leopard Shark, CA Sheephead, and
Redtail Surfperch on a vessel as long a one inch skin patch is attached and the fillets
may be of any size. The legal overall size limit for these species is unenforceable once
filleted on a boat or on shore since there is no legal filet size specified in regulations.

Informative rebuttal: (I'm trying to understand this myself)

"Wording needs to be added to Section 27.65 stating, unless there is a fillet, chunk, or steak size limit for a fish with an overall size limit, that fish may not be steaked, chunked or filleted aboard a vessel."

In addition,

"There is currently no specified filet size limit for Leopard Shark which has a size limit of 36 inches, California Sheephead which has a size limit of 12 inches and Redtail Surfperch which has a size limit of 10 1/2 inches."

It sounds to me that sheepshead has a size limit only, and no filet size limit to this date, therefore, it cannot be filleted, steaked or chunked on a vessel.

I swear they make it so confusing to benefit their agenda/revenue. These are Lawyer's terms, so you def. have to read the fine print.

Way to go on getting the kid on some fish and congrats on the new boat. Let me know if you ever want to go bigger and want to sell it.

SHEEPHEAD NEWS - don't get a ticket! I just checked with the DFG and it is true, we cannot fillet Sheephead. It's in the regulations in a gray box on page 34. It doesn't state the word "SHEEPHEAD" so you have to read all the regs to figure it out. The DFG are working on rewording the reg.
    .
    (c) Fish That May Not be Filleted, Steaked or Chunked: No person shall fillet, steak or cut into chunks on any boat or bring ashore as fillets, steaks or chunks the following: any species with a size limit unless a fillet size is otherwise specified in these regulations. California halibut may be filleted or brought ashore as fillets south of Point Arena (Mendocino County).
