Jenn and I hadn’t taken the boat out since the lingcod season re-opened and we were excited to check out our ling spots at Catalina.

For years we couldn’t buy a ling at the Island, but recently we seemed to have cracked the code: concentrate on the small structure spots in 120 to 140 feet of water that are scattered around the Island that don’t get a lot of pressure from the party boats. It’s amazing how some incredibly small stones at Catalina can hold a tremendous amount of lingcod.

Anyway, we left our slip in San Pedro Saturday morning and stopped by San Pedro Bait to check out what they had. To our surprise, Mike loaded us up with a wonderful mix of perfect bait size mackerel along with some jumbo sardines. Unfortunately, the sardines looked like the last holdovers from the previous cycle, not a new batch of fish. In any event, we had perfect ling bait, so we were pumped.

The crossing over to Catalina was much lumpier than forecasted. Once we got to the Island we hit a couple ling spots early but things were slow. To be honest, I didn’t expect much because the right tides weren’t until the afternoon. Still, we did manage one short ling and another perfect eating size fish, so it wasn’t a bad start to the day.

    Early morning linger.

We decided to take a break from the ling fishing and wait until the better tides in the afternoon, so we went looking around various beaches and kelp lines. We managed a few decent calicos, one 22 inch halibut (released), one 30 inch barracuda (first of the year for us), and some huge bat rays and leopard sharks. We didn’t see any sign of seabass or yellows, though we did find a couple areas with nice conditions.

Eventually we got closer to the afternoon high tide and went back to looking for lings. Turns out someone had finally rung the dinner bell. We ended up putting 12 more lings on the boat, including two huge 20+ pound fish that were about as nice a grade as I have seen at Catalina. All fish were caught on live mackerel, a Daiwa Saltist 20 levelwind spooled with 65 pound braid, and Shimano Trevala 66MH, and a dropper loop tied with 50 pound izor mono, a 10 ounce torpedo, and an 8/0 aki twist hook.

We kept two fish and released the rest.

My crew enjoying the ride home.

Weather looks great out there. In about two years from now, your kid will be ready to fish. Thanks for the awesome report. Did you see any whales on the way out or at the island?
