Fished cat yesterday on my boat. Only the second time I’ve made it out this summer. Got a hold of the pacific carnage on the ride out of the harbor around 5:00am and decided to pass on the sardines at Newport and head over for the squid.

Picked up a scoop out front of Avalon and headed west to try for the yellows down by the isthmus. About half way down the island we came across birds crashing and bait boiling. Huge boils of micro bait, just going crazy. Only sardines and mac’s on it. Ended up scooping a bunch up for chum. Put some in the bait tank and some in a bucket.

We started off around Empire landing and pretty much fished from there to a little west of the isthmus all day. Picked away at pretty much everything but the right kind. We got sheep head, whitefish, blue perch mud marlins’s and more bass than I can count.

Through out the day we saw the sport boats and a couple private boats picking away at the yellows. For whatever reason we couldn’t get them to go. I think they were more interested in the sardines than the squid. Finally late in the afternoon I got a ripper bite. The right kind, head shakes & pulling drag, tug life! fought it for a few minutes and boom line goes slack. spit the hook. Heartbreak!

But that’s fishing. Ended up keeping a sheep head and a white fish so we could have some fish to eat. Called it a day around 4:30 and had a easy crossing on the way back, not too much wind.

There are plenty of fish out there at Cat, just got to be at the right place at the right time.

Can’t wait to get back out there and do it again.

    Thanks for the report!
Those bait balls are a key to success right now. Maybe only macs on it when you showed up but I guarantee the gamefish were not far behind.

Dang, that's a slab whitefish! Those things pull hard. Thanks for the report, sounds like a fun day. Love the pic of your well-worn thumb. Between the spectra and the bass, our thumbs don't stand much of a chance!

Thanks for the report. That bait is so thick you could walk on it! That means the predators are nearby causing them to ball up that tight! Good effort, keep at it! I had a good ripper yellow like that one time after hours of trying to get one, was so bummed when I lost it after a minute or two fight. Like you said, its just how it goes sometimes sadly! (especially when you only get one chance!)

Nice report! Beats a day at the office.

How were you fishing the squid? Dropper, egg sinker?
