Classic Events Will Run From San Diego This Year.
As the saying goes, never leave fish to find fish. Having just wrapped up the Zane Grey, it was clear there are fish to be had out of San Diego. It is also clear that there has not been a marlin caught in Catalina waters yet this season. While it is possible the fish could move up into range of Avalon over the next 4 days, it is more likely they will remain within range of San Diego no matter where they slide to.
So the decision has been made to host the Catalina Classic and Avalon Billfish Classic out of the Kona Kai Marina in Shelter Island for 2010. It’s a tough decision; we love Avalon and really enjoy hosting the event there. But the reality is, we need marlin to host a marlin tournament, sand dabs and halibut just won’t work for our events.
While we are still hammering out the fine details, we do have the basic structure down. The Kona Kai Marina has made available all the slip space we will need for any tournament boat, and at special tournament rates. We will be hosting our check in at the Kona Kai Resort property from 4 p.m. till 7 p.m. on Sunday, September 19. We will be having all the fun and games, including fight the fish, casting, knot tying, etc. The awards will be held at the Bali Hai Restaurant on Shelter Island Tuesday evening. Weigh in will take place at the San Diego Marlin Club, who have bent over backwards to help us in this crazy fishing season. Club president Bobby Woodard has agreed to come to the check in and share the results of their I.L.T.T. tournament and some local knowledge on bait catching areas and other details.
For the fishing details, we will have a grid area ready by tournament time, with a roughly 40-50 mile radius from Point Loma, although most of the action has been within 35 miles. Fishing rules will remain unchanged. We are still taking a look at minimum size and lines out times and will have a hard answer there in the next couple days.
We have been in contact with most of the teams registered for the tournaments, and have had almost 100% support of the move. There are a couple teams that won’t be able make it down, and we understand their position. We also expect to pick up a few teams as word gets out that there will be fish to catch in this event.

Nothing can replace Catalina for these tournaments, but with that said, I think this is a very good decision to host the tournament here considering the current fishing & conditions.

This should prove to be a pretty cool, as there are some fish relatively close right now, hell even Brant stumbled on some yesterday LOL.
