after making 15 Mack’s at nachos and two scoops of bait we got to Catalina at 8am. Chummed sardines all day only to have seals take all the mackerels. Limited on bonitos by noon(they’re everywhere). Continued to look for yellows up and down the front side for no success. F them seals. Anchored up at toyon, slept, got up and continued the yellowtail search for nothing by 9am Sunday.

Made the decision to shoot back to local waters and mess around. Anchored up at mussel farm and went 1-6 yellows. The 3 Live mackerels we had left we’re bit instantly. Unfortunately none for landed. Ended up using the dead Mack’s and still got bit after a lot of chumming! Again unfortunately couldn’t stop them on 20lb test before they got to the nets. Finally got one around noon(smallest one from the feel of it compared to the others that got away). Also hooked up on some 3-5lb sand bass on dead squid.

Didn’t see the trollers hook up on anything. Told two of them they’re right here and we just lost three within 10 minutes. They ignored us. ‍♂️ Jokingly asked to trade bonitos for live mackerels but got the stank eye. I guess I wasn’t really joking though cause they were only biting mackerels dead or alive. Didn’t touch the sardines.

    Good luck out there.

I feel you on the dogs! We went 2 for 3 on the YT front side of Cat on Sat. We did not make that many macks and the dogs got the rest of them. With no bait we heading in at noon and it got real snotty for that last 8 miles, One question, who fishing YT with 20lb test? If you want to take home some tails its the 40 string that you should be using. For water with stucture we chase um down as well. You don't want 20LB YT running around 75 yrds behind your boat in 80ft of water! Even on 40 string, you are likely to get rocked by hafe of them if you dont go and get them! When one guy gets bit the other one reels in his line and drives the boat to the fish so you can get you line back and control the fish before u get rocked.

I hear ya. Lazy mentality. Didn’t want to get the 30 set up from inside and expectations were low. Everything happened so fast and all the live Mack’s disappeared like magic. Lol

My buddy did get the 30 out eventually but only the 20 test was able to get hit with the dead Mack’s.

When I scored my two yellow last week at Catalina, the key was not to attract sea lions by throwing an endless supply of bait in the water. My experience is, once those dogs are on you, you can forget about the game fish. Catalina game fish know they're in sea lion territory and will get the fuck out at first sight. When the dogs finally found me around noon, the bite shut down instantly.

So unless you know the fish are below you and that you can bring them up with two dozen sardines in the water, I'd avoid teaching the sea lions that you're a fast food truck.

Yeah I think that would be the new game plan. What I’ve been doing is if the dogs show up we stop chumming and fishing al together. Have a few beers and wait for them to leave.

Yeah. He went behind my boat near my flylines. Wasn’t TOO close so whatever, didn’t mind it was slow anyway. He actually went between me and another boat anchored 30 yards from me. Lol We were just chillen.

Yea, the dogs in the hood are always tough!
We did not chum, but they keyed on the slow moving boat.
On the last pass, he jetted right past us to find our baits 75 yrds out. Fing bastard r smart.
