Islands Catalina 25th, 2023

Ran to Catalina with my boy, weather was chilly but beautiful. Smooth crossings there and back. Lots of life on the frontside and the backside by the V’s.
Two squid boats working by Silver Canyon, tried drifting for Halibut but all we got is big mackerels, sandbass, and a Mantis shrimp, which was the highlight for us. Also got some Bonies by the quarry.
DFW checked us again no issues, cool guys and they told me a boat working shallow water by the V’s had 3 Nice Halibut!! Water temp was 57-58.
Great trip for us full of laughs and shit talking!!

Thanks for your report! Cool looking mantis shrimp. Did you eat it? Glad to see the bones are still on the bite. I wish I could get out there but none of the sport boats are fishing it. I guess it's a long run for them when the booking numbers are low this time of year

Any opportunity to get out to the islands with good weather this time of year is awesome, throw a few fish in there and that’s a win in my book!

What was the bait situation like? And did you try jigging squid at all?

Yeah looked in my bait tank, cooler, and checked our licenses.

All I brought was fresh dead squid we scooped up from a few trips ago !! Didn’t try for squid but they are definitely there !! Lots of bait all over as well !!
