Left cabrillo around 530am and grabbed some live squid from nachos apears that san pedro bait is still doing maintenance.
Went around the backside past the squid fleet and tried a few spots for a few bass and a huge whitefish.
Also hooked a wsb that was probably legal. I didnt have net and didnt want to gaff him and ended up dropping the fish while attempting to wrangle him in. Have never caught one under 25-30lbs save the babies in the harbor so didnt have a good reference but was probably 10-12lbs.
Went over near whites landing and had a wide open 1-3lb bonito bite on light tackle and had alot fun.
Anchored in a cove north of whites landind for lunch and caught a just legal halibut in about 30ft of water.
Wind wasn't bad and was able to get back in just over an hour.
Dfg was out in force boarding vessels it looked like the thresher with her rib.
Cant wait for the water to warm up.

FYI, I understand that if F&G sees you fishing for WSB or Halibut without a net they can ticket you for $500. I bought a collapsible net just for this purpose.

There is no net requirement, that is not true
    28.65. General.
No person shall take finfish from any boat or other floating device in ocean waters without having a landing net in possession or available for immediate use to assist in landing undersize fish of species having minimum size limits; the opening of any such landing net shall be not less than eighteen inches in diameter

I was going to post the DFG requirements but several of my eagle eyed BD brethren beat me to it. It's one of those things that if you have a net, they'll never ask to see it. But my luck is that if I left it at home, I would get a ticket.

I have a checklist that has everything needed for overnighters to Catalina. If I forget anything, it means I didn't read the list correctly.

I can post a copy of it for anyone to use, you'll just owe me a beer next time I see you at the island!

I wonder if lip grippers would count as a net? That’s what I like to carry in my skiff just to save room (LV14s don’t have a whole lotta room). I feel like they don’t beat the fish up as much. Looks like I’ll be buying a net

    Dude you are nuts!

Hey, what can I say. It's for multi-day trips to the island. I have used every item on that list at some point, except the fire extinguisher and the flares. Customize your own list. If it saves you from forgetting something even once, it's worth it!

Obviously I don't take the spare tire and the grease gun on the boat :D

Get a daytime distress flag to keep on board. Meets requirements during daylight hours. I also keep one of the battery powered distress signals for those early mornings.

Great minds think alike. My LED SOS beacon (with a flag) arrived today.Though illegal, I’m going to keep the expired flares onboard too.

I use this as it collapses, and folds in half. I've never used it, but have it onboard.

KastKing Fishing Net Folding Landing Net from amazon.
