X2 on the dry ice. Two good aspects is when you get home you put it in your freezer w/o having to dry the bags off which takes time and potentially bruises your fillets. Secondly and most important is that most freezers are designed to keep things frozen, not to freeze them. It can take up to 3-4 days to freeze a large bulk of meat down to the center of the pile. Depending on your ice chest, if you get enough dry ice and seal the seams with tape. & cover with a blanket it will be rock solid frozen by the next morning.Consider buying some dry ice for the trip home, you can get it at Smart and Final
were looking at a 2 day to start. tomahawk or mustang or similar. no permits or passports, i dont drink. thanks! this is all wonderful info. What boat are you going on, That would help because some of the boats don't provide meals , some do, some have meal plans, snacks between meals. If you can Book a true LR boat and whatever you do, DONT BOOK THE CONSTITUTION, You can never have enough money on that boat. Also keep in mind, Permits, fuel surcharge, meal plans, drinks, tips, etc. You will not get nickled and dimed to death on the true LR boats and offer more for your money. Also if you can swing it, do at least 3 day trip or 3.5 day trip, It's not going to cost that much more after you factor in your total costs. Another thing to consider is the LR boats have loaner gear, All you pay for is a line fill appx $15, and each line fill up if needed for the same $$.
i like to be prepared. seems you cant really get away with less than that.. can you?2-5k for a 2 day,you guys are ballers!
definately going to do my best to keep it all safe and cold and protected. thanks for the tip!X2 on the dry ice. I know this sounds like a bunch of work but it’s the next best thing to leaving it with the processor to be flash frozen. BTW, 5Star has a dry ice company the next block over. Easy peezy.
what would you bring?A $2,000 dollar budget for a two day trip ? What has the world come to ?
This is the goal. Again ultimately I want to give my friends a solid chance at having a good time. They aren’t in the same financial situation I am so it’s harder to pull off without advanced planning and the like. $2000 over a year seems feasible for them so we are all optimistic. I’m starting with 2 day for a few reasons. Mainly time. I have a 2 month old that will be a little over a year old when I go so not trying to leave momma solo for a week. 4 days away seems more than reasonable for my first. Others in my group work jobs they can’t get away from and that's limiting. With that budget you should come home with cash in your pocket. Give it a few years and maybe not.
$13 for my daughter to eat shitty food at mcdonalds is what the world has come to.A $2,000 dollar budget for a two day trip ? What has the world come to ?
Ive noticed that the tight shorts of the 70 that your gramps and all of us wore back then are finally coming back into style. I dont like it as Im getting older and very comfortable in long board shorts, but maybe some nut huggin tighties will find their way into my fish pics in the near future. I love the old NBA pics and the shorts they wore in the 70s. your gramps killed it back in the day even without all the "necessary" equipment that guys need to have or they wont catch fish in the modern day. Props to the OGs!!This is the goal. Again ultimately I want to give my friends a solid chance at having a good time. Also Grandpa was a long ranger. Check my other posts and you will see why I want to follow his footsteps. In time I will get on longer trips, spend all the money, and see some of you at the rails while I catch a wahoo or something exotic like Hobie. I will get on some of hte same boats he took and make some of his experiences mine.
If any of us come home with money and fish, even better.

THANK YOU! ive been looking for his wahoo rod (i think a looooong honey e glass sabre) but i have a few years before thats a reality. otherwise, im buying up a few better condition penn reels and doing the kits to them myself to get some understanding on that. very thankful i found this place!I love that your on this wonderful mission.
If your adventure requires a certain reel or rod that Gramps fished, make sure you let us know so we can help.
AMAZING and SO GENEROUS! thank you! ill keep you in the loop to my plans. You are getting good advice, mostly. But the extra bucks available is, in my experience, mostly about processing. I usually don't catch a limit, after a couple of bluefin I am physically spent and do hook&hand to others. But in my last trip, a 3-day in November, I ended up with my six fish limit, a total weight of 385 pounds. Nothing really huge, a low of 50 and the others between 63 and 74 pounds gilled and gutted. But the processing charge was $673.75 with a 3.95% charge fee included. You may get lucky, too.
I personally figure 20% of the boat cost for normal tip, and have an extra hundred in my wallet for exceptional circumstances. It came into play a year ago when I tangled with a cow bluefin and the crew fought 2/3 of the fight for me because that #*@$* fish was trying to kill me, and we got it at last even though it was foul-hooked.
If it works out for you time-wise to detour to Long Beach on your way south and north, I will loan you several hundred dollars worth of good rigged lures for free, just replace anything lost.
this is a solid plan! i will do this in the next few weeks after i get a better headcount of who is interested in my gang of fishermen. i will have my own stash of tackle as i plan on doing this long term. the rest i will take some of their cash for a few things to share. hooks and sinkers and the like. that will be an additional post probably 3-6 months ahead of the actual trip looking for relevant info. someone said to plan on a few packs of hyper specific tackle and jigs on the landing so thats already in the budget.A lot of good information here. My big question would be how much of an increase will there be next year.
As to cash vs. plastic... Other than tipping most can be covered with plastic. Oh there is an ATM machine by H&M, however sometimes it's not working. Some of the boats and the processors have a surcharge if you use plastic.
Tipping the crew is usually one tip for the entire crew, 15-20%. More if you're happy with them or if someone is exceptional in your mind.
Extras on the boat are usually, terminal tackle, soda, beer, fuel and permits. Parking is plastic. Be aware a few of the hotels let you park over the length of your trip.. some charge and a few are FREE.
Processing: If you intend to spend the night and pick up your fish the next morning, let the process know and have them put the fillets in their blast freezer. That does make a difference. Also ask if they sell Dry ice. Pack the ice chest tight and minimize any air space. There are discussion on this forum about packing your fish.
Now here's my suggestion since you are talking about next year. First you should have a better idea as to the real expense after January.
As of now, I'd call the landing and ask about boat price, permit, fuel, rod rental, etc. and make a list. Depending on when you're going you'll most likely need three set ups. Then you'd have a better idea. Then add say 10% to be safe. Then check again after January.
Terminal tackle can run up your tab. Just be careful what someone tries to sell you, you may not need it. The crew will help you set up.
BTW: if you do decide to take a longer trip on one of the true LR boats, they generally have a lot of repeat customers who are more than willing to give you or loan you jigs, etc. If you lose one just replace it.
Keep asking question.
R
PS: if your bring a group of newbies, split the tackle cost and all of you work out of the same tackle box. You get a better price with a pro pack of hooks. and sharing fluorocarbon, etc.
i do this for the delivery guys in the hot months. ill do the same for the boat staff. GREAT IDEA! thanks.+ 20% should keep you in budget. I bring red bulls and some snackes for the deck hands as well as a bottle of bozze for the capt. which is not part of the tip when i can. I belive it brings good well and service to my trip ans experience.
I don’t think for that price, this is a solid plan! i will do this in the next few weeks after i get a better headcount of who is interested in my gang of fishermen. i will have my own stash of tackle as i plan on doing this long term. the rest i will take some of their cash for a few things to share. hooks and sinkers and the like. that will be an additional post probably 3-6 months ahead of the actual trip looking for relevant info. someone said to plan on a few packs of hyper specific tackle and jigs on the landing so thats already in the budget.
im basing all this off the mustang and tomahawks $555 2 day trip prices. if it goes up it goes up and i will still go. maybe a friend or two will not. we will see. seems like theres a few boats i can get on for my ideal price and i already have the next several years on paper to get planned out as i go and get gear and info from all you nice folks.
thanks a TON!
yah i didnt really think the food would be included. when i do my adventuring i have a fast i take before i go to avoid shitting myself the entire time so i will bring my usual foods and warn the rest of the group.I don’t think for that price,
That the meals are included, just to let you know.
