I’m all in on the surface jig action for them. Got a new jig stick just for it and am having Ken switch out the gears on my Tq 25 to the lower gears just for that purpose. Love watching them blow the jig up on the surface, just have to make sure the hook is razor sharp so it sticks
Catching wahoo on the surface, is the coolest thing you will ever do with your pants on!!!!!

My last trip the guys were getting blown up on that bird shit color one and blue and white but only getting one in five to stick.

JRI has some single hook wahoo surface jigs I’m going to give a go as well as the usual Tady 45’s

Depends on light conditions, overcast I like the JRI 4 wahoo jig in purple / black, the green or the pink gets bit good in brighter conditions. I really like the larger JRI surface iron jig in the mackeral pattern too, I switch out the treble for a single owner hook, I like the owner offshore hook.

I bought a box of about 30 wahoo jigs from a guy last year. It must have half a dozen of those purple/grey and purple/white surface irons. I'm gonna give it a try on my 10day. Getting my first grouper and a wahoo on a surface iron are my high hopes for this year. Considering I've only caught wahoo on the troll and on bait, that might be a tall order! But I'm planning on throwing iron and bombs a bunch this time. One or two 'hoo in the box for me, and I'm going to give that surface iron a shot...

Had this one tied on, end of a great 10 day, late October into early November, 2019. Had a feeling it might work. Sure enough I managed to get one to eat it.

Recently fished a 16 day and took my surface iron outfit to target Wahoo. One afternoon both kites were flying off the stern and the current had our flylined offerings off the port corner. Made a couple of casts, nailed one and then a second one. Too much fun!

That's a 7X, think I got it as a swag giveaway on a trip on the Angler.

If you get a grouper on surface iron, your gonna join a fairly small group of folks to do do that! I'm not talking about a cabrilla, but a regulation grouper. It's probably possible, but I've never seen anybody do it.

I didn't mean it to come out that way LOL ... Getting my first grouper. And a wahoo on a surface iron. Probably drop a skippie on my 100lb setup for the grouper.

My last trip, a guy hooked a skipjack and a beast of a wahoo came up to the boat and bit it in half, the he was all lit up and the crew put the other half of the skipjack on the end of the gaff, this wahoo, which I conservatively estimate at 60 pounds, tried to eat that gaffed skipjack 2 or 3 times! I've never seen a wahoo that aggressive, he swam about 25 feet off the stern, I cast my surface iron at him, he ate it and launched out of the water probably 20 feet doing cartwheels and bit me off!!! He was angry as hell! Looking back, it was really cool to see such a pissed off wahoo! Eating what was left off a 10lb skipjack off the end of the gaff! That wahoo needs anger management classes!!!

Skippie zipped by a large wahoo. This was a 10 day trip so we were at the Rocks or maybe Ridge.

Had a wahoo cut a skippie in half at eye level bouncing the fish in the corner at Roca Partida. Good thing he did not point my way.

    Yo Nick,

I have had great luck on JRI 2, single hook, in the Black/Purple...I always bend the pointy end of the hook in on the Siwash hook, towards the shank, about 5 to 10 degrees. I generally get at least one wahoo on those irons every trip and it is a blast..

I also have had luck with the JRI 4 with the Owner single hooks (No bending of the hook required).. Other than poppers, which are much less effective but amazingly fun on Wahoo and every other species, Surface Iron is my favorite visual for Wahoo. Though I mostly throw bombs (Much less visual unless you are throwing at boils or sight fishing those bastardos near the boat), I will spend a bunch of stops on a bunch of days throwing surface junk at those skinnies.

For me, a super slow retrieve works best on both the JRI 2 and JRI 4.. Max kick without dipping the back end for Wahoo.

Have a great season. Note: I would absolutely start stocking up on Wahoo gear sooner than later if that is your need.. With the lack of supply from Suppliers and distributors, Species specific gear just flies off the shelf when it comes in prior to or during each season.. Once a picture is posted with a given color or a specific product, there will be none left on the shelves and the angler will be behind on the waiting lists.

I’ve always been a fan of the wired Catchy Tackle bombs, but I’m intrigued by the idea of a fluoro leader. Can you provide any more details? How often do you get bit off? If it gets inhaled, does the leader ever survive to land the fish? How many fish will an average leader last? Is there a trade off with more bites, but more losses? I’ve had a couple wahoo even bite through a wired bomb, so just trying to understand how the fluoro stands up.
130lb fluoro leader will last for a few bites just fine. Bring some extra leader material and retie at night.
