Anyone know what this is? It swam up to our squid light on the seabass grounds out at the Channel Islands.

Ahh. Cool. Thanks for the ID. Didn’t know the juveniles would be hanging out on the surface. I know the adults live super deep. That’s one thing I love about the ocean. I learn or see something new just about every time out and I go out a lot.

It would be great for a fish scientist to chime in here because I can't be the only person interested the the life cycle of this strange fish. I've caught 12" - 16" juvenile black cod (sablefish) in under 200 feet while fishing halibut off the end of Admiralty Island but never a larger one. The 7 - 25# black cod are always in something around 2000 feet.
