I've restored many factory rods including Calstars using that exact shade of Gudebrod thread and executing factory wraps. So if you run into any "counterfeits" it may very well be legit.

here is a side-by-side pull to compare the bend in a factory GF875H (30-60)

it appears the heavier 875H has more bend on the same load than the lighter-rated rod

I think my best to solve the mystery is to take it to Fisherman's landing tackle and Seaforth tackle and compare it to a factory blank...

    AND IN CONCLUSION...

I stopped by both Seaforth and Fisherman's Landing tackle shop this morning to find a GF 800ML (15-40) to compare - both had 800M blanks but no ML.

Doug looked at my suspect rod and concluded:
    1. It was a genuine Grafighter blank, he said, the labels are a clue because Calstar labels are controlled, custom rod builders are not allowed to use them.
    2. He added it was indeed a not retail factory production rod, but said it was most likely a Calstar custom order they built for a shop, he said that is common practice for Seeker and Calstar.
    3. He, too, identified my rod as a "marlin caster" for the modifications.
He also said it was a solid 30-pound rod.
And that the guides are an upgrade above the Aluminum Oxide normally uses on their retail rods.

On that, I presume the person who built this special order simply did not sand down the graphite on a special order and that's why it looks more textured than the others I see.

HI! I am the production supervisor at Calstar. The rod you have in your picture is one we made specially for some customer. You can see that with the abbreviated label that says only GF without the GR or DH designation. I can't tell you who we made this rod for but it was made to their specification as a marlin casting rod. It is a genuine Calstar rod built at our factory.

Uh, sorry but when we make a non standard rod, I have to cut the labels so they are not mistaken for our cataloged factory rods. Sometimes I have to lay in a different line rating or blank number and I am stripping in the different label pieces. Unfortunately you received erroneous information.

You’ve got a rod on your wall with an epoxy job like this and you’re worried about whether or not the blank on your new rod is an original Calstar?

I think that’s the 30-80 — stole that one at $150 — my sloppy build up was to seal in some rust issues on the guides

but you should see my goofy thread wraps if you want a bigger laugh - most my calstars are custom builds by me

I don’t seem to have gotten any better over the years…rod building is not my super power

    but I love those grafighters…
