just picked up Xlint used factory wrapped
    Grafighter GF 800 ML (15-40)
w/ Fuji reel seat and hypalon grips
    (not deckhand series)

it measures only 91 inches (not 8' 96" as expected)

and it has oversized marlin guides, Fuji Hardloy guides
I found info on the guides

but am wondering about the short 800 series rod
the rod has the expected 9 guides
    and everything looks original

    any idea what's going on
    calstar is closed till Monday...

    FINAL UPDATE Sept 22, 2021
    THE FINAL WORD:

roddaddy posted #37: "I am the production supervisor at Calstar ... (your rod) was made to (a customer's) specification as a marlin casting rod. It is a genuine Calstar rod built at our factory."

UPDATE-CONCLUSION June 2021: Doug at Fisherman's Landing looked at my suspect rod and concluded:
    1. It was a genuine Grafighter blank, he said, the labels are a clue because Calstar labels are controlled, custom rod builders are not allowed to use them
    2. He added it was indeed a not retail factory production rod, but said it was most likely a Calstar custom order they built for a shop, he said that is common practice for Seeker and Calstar
see my post #34 below for more detail

Is my grafighter Calstar fishing rod genuine factory rod Vs knockoffs, fakes, not genuine, counterfeits, imitations

ys, the oversized guides ... I'm wondering about the missing five inches on an 8' rod - it doesn't look modified from factory layout

Is the rod still a 40lb. rod? ( max)
You picked it up? why? It looks like the tip of the rod is normal,Except for the oversized guide, so must be missing the butt end bringing it down to a 25 or 30lb , but, if its missing some tip, its still has the same rating, Get rid of it

the reel seat, fore-grip and stripper guide all line up with other grafighters I have so I think it was laid out that way at the factory

I will call Calstar on Monday - see if they might have some info on it...

I have seen some Custom work from guy's in SoCal, that looks just like Factory wraps, maybe a re-wrap, and cut, or a Factory proto rod?

if this is a custom build - then someone made a great effort to make it look like a factory rod

my instinct is this is an unaltered factory rod and 15-40 line class as labeled

Will update after I talk to calstar

    skrilla: Those aren't Hardloy rings.

Fair, I don't see the Fuji imprint, but maybe Hardloy-style is better, but what are they then?

hucklongfin: Looks like a custom wrap.

Seeing is believing - plenty of resolution to zoom in on the detail (they look legit to me):

From here the guides on the marlin caster look like Fuji Concept O rings which are black with a slight tint of brown. They replaced Hardloy rings. Both are variations of aluminum oxide.

The last post shows some rods with what looks like Hardloy rings as they are gray with almost a slight purplish tint at times.

So the tip cut, makes it a 800M? Could the guides be old concept HN Aluminum Oxide,
    or Silicon Nitride?

Probably a custom rod that was wrapped to look like factory. The customer must have wanted it cut down. I had a 700m with oversized guides that looked exactly like factory. Notice your rod says GF not GFGR? That’s the Calstar blank model. A factory 800ML is a GFGR.

    Okay, naysayers:

    This from Calstar email:

    May 27, 2021

I am sorry to say, we believe this is not an authentic factory production rod.
Labels, guides and length are incorrect.
It appears to be a custom build made to resemble the real deal.
It still looks good and hopefully will work well for you.

    Best regards,

If you are interested how to spot calstar rod fakes, I am posting this in hopes calstar can drop back in my email link here for the new comparison photos:

The sloppy work with the labels is easy to spot in this photo:

The Grafighter label was trimmed on the sides, and the 15-40 stuck on top overlapping the lower. My 6 other factory have the full grafighter labels... zoom in for closeup

post edit: I’ve since seen other factory production rods that have had the line rating clipped and stuck on top the grafighter label, so shoddy labeling is not conclusive

The lower layout above compares layouts GF875H alongside the GF800ML

This view shows and calls out the measurements where the black fiberglass begins on both rods

On the 800ML, the tip of the fiberglass starts 40 inches above the bottom of its gimbal

On the 875H, the tip of the fiberglass starts 56 inches above the bottom of its gimbal

    MOREOVER:

The 800ML has significantly courser weave in its graphite

The only concern I have at this point is determining if it is a legit Grafighter blank

The seller offered to refund, but I love the bendo if it is a good 30# rod - I haven't compared that yet

Ok, someone ordered a custom rod and told the wrapper to make it look like a factory Calstar so it matches his other rods.
