I'm pretty new to long range fishing and recently picked up a new Penn Fathom 40NLD2 with 80# Spectra. Looking to have a custom rod made for it. Which rod would you recommend for it, the Calstar GF 700XH or the GF 770XH?

X2 on the 700XH, a great rod for 50, 60lb. The 770XH is a rail rod and intended for heavier line then your Fathom 40NLD2 can handle in the long run.

X3 on the 700XH. The rod and reel are at their heaviest 60# setups but will fill that need well.

You might take a look at the 7400xh as well depending on the action you like. It's a faster action 700xh. The 875xh is another great choice if you want a 7-6.
