There are much better choices for that rod. Trini 20a. Torque 25n star, even Torium 16 or. 20.

The rod and the reel can handle it, but its an odd combination. Nate knows what is up.

Are the studs even wide enough to make it around the butt of a 90j?

A 90J is an old school jig rod. An sx raptor is not what you want for throwing jigs on a rod like that. What you need is a Newell 338F or an older model Trinidad 30 filled with 40lb mono.

My personal preference for that rod would be a Daiwa Saltist BG 35 or 40. The main thing is if that combo is comfortable and works for you stick with it.

If that is your preference it will work. Works best with straight braid in my opinion, if you want to fish a long mono topshot I’d prefer a regular star drag. I have both, I like both.

That’s a great question, the studs generally are not long and the width is also narrow.

I have a Daiwa BG 40 on mine, perfect combo. Loaded with 60lb braid and about 120 yds of 40lb that I change out when needed.

Its a OG glass rod. In keeping with that tradition, I'd also consider finding a nice used Newell 332. That reel was made for that rod. That's what my 90J wears. Makes my back hurt just thinking about it, but like a 69 Mustang, some things just never go out of style!

No self respecting 90j would ever wear a lever drag............... a daiwa 35 will fit. But a Newell 332 just looks right on that rod.
