Ok. I have about 20 bombs, a bunch of raider jigs, and lots of old rigged things with rusty wire. I have had advice to use titanium crimped wire, 150lb fluoro, and traditional haywire single strand wire. Honestly I prefer crimps because of my soft hands and fingers. But by the end of every trip my haywire proficiency is good. I don’t care about the cost of fluoro or titanium. That’s partially a lie but relative to the investment made in other equipment and time it’s not significant. As I haven’t been on a trip for awhile I have discarding tons of old line and gear. In fact I should probably start a thread on equipment and terminal tackle salvage. That includes hooks, swivels , rigging, line, wire, jigs, rods and reels. Yeah that’s a lot. For now I’m focusing on hoo.

I am not an expert, so I can't give you the info that you are looking for. If you use the search function at the upper right of the screen, you will find lot of interesting articles about rigging for wahoo fishing.

I am a big fan of Captain Jimmy's Wahoo bombs... I really like the green.... but fast is the ticket to getting bit.... Let the bomb sink about 15-20 seconds... what you want is a 45 degree angle thus covering more of the water column. I am also a huge fan of 130 fluro tied to the bomb with a swivel to your main line of 40-50 mono. I don't crimp... if you can't do a good knot then ask a deckhand. On my recent trip last week on the Indy I hooked and handed off 6 wahoo and still caught 11. Its a fast reel...the right rod and a really tight drag set.

Are most guys fishing a long mono topshot or rigging with spectra to a short topshot for their wahoo reels these days? Haven’t targeted them in awhile so would be interested in the reel set up as well...
Thanks!

If you’re getting tired, cut off the spinner! After a few hundred casts, it matters!

I have caught hundreds of those fish. In my opinion, most people overthink on how to catch them. When using bombs, speed is the key. The old, gold trinidad 20's along with the newell 440 are great with bombs. If you want to catch them on a bomb, when they yell hookup, run to the bow and cast to the inside. Do not throw over a hooked fish. Let it sink for 30 seconds or more and wind like hell. They will bite it when it it almost back to the boat. Don't put the rod in a rod belt as the instant you stop winding, you will lose the fish. Keep the line tight and you will get them.

For bait fishing I have settled on "Knot to Kinky" titantium wire (35 lb with 4/0 and a J hook) with the finished leader between 20 and 24"'. Drop your bait back the instant they yell hook up and if you do not get one, wind in and belly hook a fresh bait every 30 seconds until the boat leaves. You will catch your fair share doing this.

Good luck!

ALL Solid advice brother..... "cast to the inside"👍!! Many miss this point. Wahoo battles rarely start straight up and down... right.

I’ve been able to look down at the bow and see them take it. Don‘t stop cranking!

That's what I figured. I usually have thrown bait after a trolling stop. This year I want to catch some hoo on bombs/jigs, etc. Especially a surface iron. That's one of my goals this year.

If I remember, you like to ride the Vagabond. He is a magician when it comes to catching wahoo. Let him know what you want to do and he will point you in the right direction. My friends 17 year old daughter listened to him intently during one of his 10 day seminars and she had 15 wahoo in 2 days when most of the guys were lucky to have 5. She listened, because she was a first timer and did not want to screw up and on top of she had no bad habits to break, executed it perfectly and it paid off.

Yeah, I'm on the 10-day after your trip. On the Vagabond. I'll hit Mike up for tips this time. He actually suggested bait last year, as the fish had been hammered the whole season already with hardware. One guy (the Phenix rep) threw bombs the whole time, even when the rest of us were catching YT at Alijos or schoolie tuna on the Ridge, and he did well.

I can tie! Just worried about donating gear to the hoo gods. Jimmie is a local. Just ordered a dozen bombs. Thanks for the info.
As long as anyone fishes wahoo, they will be donating to the wahoo gods occasionally. You have to be able to deal with acceptable losses, but compared to the price of the trip, losing a few jigs or bombs is nothing. Me personally, I'd rather take the chance with floracarbon, and get bit better, you can't land a wahoo you can't hook. Keep a rod with a wired up jig or bomb if they go wide open, but in most cases at the ridge or rocks, your gonna be fishing wahoo that have seen a lot of fishing pressure, they respond much better to a unwired presentation. Sometimes ( even though I hate doing it) I will fish 27# single strand wire if they get really picky, on a 20-25# floracarbon leader. The crews don't like it, but it is a good way to put a wahoo in your gunny sack.

Many years ago, while fishing with Tommy Rothery on the Polaris Supreme, he was showing a lady on how to fish the stern, on anchor, while the boat was swinging.

I asked him why he didn't show me how to do it. He replied,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,," because you guys don't listen"

Yes, Mike told me almost the same thing as he was not surprised by this novices success at all. He said young ladies in high school listen the best and they generally do the best by the end of the trip. He made me laugh and I added, "that all stops once they get married!" We both laughed.

Question,
When fishing a Wahoo Bomb how long should the piece of fluoro be?
Thx
KH
3 feet is about what I use, maybe a tad bit longer. In my opinion, probably the best thing you can do,weather it be bombs or jigs. After a jig strike, breathe through your nose, cast said jig or bomb, and even if you see a couple wahoo on the surface, let your bomb or jig sink , you just gotta calm down, whatever your seeing on the surface is most likely minuscule to what is down deeper, depending on current, I count at least to 30 before grinding my jig. When it's close to the boat, throw it out of gear, and work the water column again, maybe 2 or three times, depending on how your scoped out. And never ever stop fishing until the boat starts trolling again! Can't tell you how many times, guys are standing around, waiting until the boat takes off on its next trolling rotation, and I've hooked another one! Maximize your time in wahoo country! Can't tell you how many times I've caught 3 on one trolling rotation.

I refuse to accept or believe that wahoo see 69lb single strand wire and turn away with their noses up. They eat marauders rigged with 275lb cable leaders and two 7691’s with swivels hanging off of it routinely.

Direct hit (cut prey in half) on a casting jig on the sink or slow grind. The hoo is going through 130lb or 50lb mono/fluoro like hot knife and butter. Slack line, jig gone on the sink. Straight 50lb gets bit much better then 130lb on a casting jig (not bomb) on the speed wind

Treble hook in my opinion, close to the jig. Can make a hoo react to eating the bait whole and not dividing into 2 bites. Getting the hook

Read Captain Bruce Smiths article about wahoo fishing, Bruce Smith forgot more about wahoo fishing than you and I will ever know. He was a long range captain for many years, if you read his article you may change your mind about refusing to believe what a wahoo will and won't eat! I defer to the professionals, and listen to there advice, especially a Captain of his caliber. Do yourself a favor and go online and read it!

I agree with winding your jig or bomb of choice as fast as you can!! BUT stop the wind about 5 feet from the boat. I have seen a few times, a guy will wind all the way in and lift quickly. A wahoo comes OUT of the water and either hit the side of the boat OR actually came over the rail. VERY dangerous. These critters are a problem, as we know, when they come aboard by gaff but much worse when they do it themselves LOL !! Be careful out there and when catching wahoo never wear open toed shoes, like thongs etc. JMO :)

He knows about this topic. If there were no limits Dwayne could easily decimate the entire wahoo population. There are limits and he adheres to them easily catching his limit and helping others to get some.

I had this same conversation with Mike Lackey, which is what solidified my stance in that wahoo aren’t being line shy when they aren’t biting on bombs rigged with single strand.
