I grew up in Whittier in the 50's and 60's. The neighborhoods had beautiful clean tree lined streets. The schools and parks were immaculate. In high school we had wood shop, metal shop, auto shop, driver training and after school sports of every kind. I don't remember a single burglary or auto theft in our neighborhood during the entire time I lived there.
Every house had a two parent family where the father worked a blue collar job at the Ford factory, Kaiser steel, Goodyear tire etc. The moms stayed home and took care of the kids. Anybody with a decent job could afford a nice house and car and could afford to raise a family without any problem.
I look around now and I wonder where everything went wrong. Now we have run down neighborhoods, gangs, crime, homeless people everywhere. The schools are surrounded by fences to prevent burglaries and vandalism. The parks and libraries are filled with homeless people. The education system is broken, the criminal justice system is broken and nothing in the state seems to work right.
The politicians keep telling us that all we need to do is raise taxes, legalize drugs, release criminals, defund the police, open the borders and everything will be great. I just shake my head and wonder if people are ever going to wake up.

If the State can tax you at 16% for 10 years after you leave the state why not 20% or 25% for the rest of your life. Just another attempt by crooked politicians to rob the hardworking taxpayers and they wonder why all the decent people are leaving the state. It will never stand up in court but that has never stopped the Sacramento politicians.
Old thread, but first off they (CA) can't tax residency if none exists. However there are rules and sometimes stepping foot inside or outside an area can cause problems. Many go to say WY and pretend they are residents - but don't actually do the time - funny thing is WY is very good at tracking who and where you are for hunting tag purposes (that trip to Vegas or Orlando - LOL might well cause you a problem). Very good at it they are - and so is California. Expect to spend the time in the state or away - according to the rules.

Many years ago California (and others) tried to tax 401k/457/Pensions that were earned in California against the residents that then left/fled at retirement or otherwise. California lost. The Supreme Court case number escapes me, but for sure California wanted you to be a tax prisoner until they suck every last dime out of you.

Now that being said, trust only what is true - and play by the rules. You leave California for Nevada, Florida. wherever.. - make damn sure you don't set foot in it again for whatever the period is. Err on the side of caution.

Same holds true for where you go to. Don't claim a damn thing until you are 100% legit. With AI today and the tracking and outsourcing of data mining by munis, states, etc., the safe bet is playing the safe game to keep your cash.

I avoid driving through California because of their gun regulations and wonder how much more will the state do in extracting residents money and restrictive laws before it finally reaches enough.

What I find the most interesting is that CA gov. continues to put their head in the sand and deny the facts. More high income people are leaving CA than coming in. Outward migration is a real issue for CA. Lost Congressional seats prove the facts.

I personally know seven seven high income households that have left CA in the past two years due to the social and economic issue CA creates. My wife and I are flying test balloons for a possible move as well.

I truly wonder what their long term plan and goal is. By the looks of it, turning CA into a third world country seems to be well underway.

I agree, I'm losing a longtime next door neighbor - a great neighbor who is going to Nevada.

How anyone can/would want to buy a 2/1 for a million is beyond me. But that's what they are fetching on our street.

I keep telling the wife we need to follow suit and flee.

One thing California residents can claim they have a Governor that cares more for illegals than his own citizens. I say this because any Governor that proposes closing a veterans home to save 14 million then turns around a wants to sent out 130 million in subsistence checks to illegals does not deserve to represent his state. Thank god the legislature did not see his proposed budget the same way.

Well, not exactly. The Gov does not care about illegals, residents, citizens. Only his own political ascent or prevention of his descent. He will pander to anyone for a vote.

Those that remember him from N. Cal remember him preying on his campaign manager's wife - when his campaign manager was working around the clock. The Cal Gov is not a man of simple integrity.

Few politicians are. We as Cal residents are simply sidelined.

What amazes me there are so many head up there ass voters like in Seattle and Portland that keep voting in these idiot spenders and vote buying politicians. Somewhere the taxing will break the bank and when that happens it will become a spiral impact to us all. Portland is well on its way with sometimes as many as 4 death by gun violence per day. And they underfunded the police moving that budget to social services. My guess is some social worker will get blown away by a gun toting person high of drugs before social minded reformers get the big picture. Its the liberal feel good agenda rolling along and getting up a head of steam. I'm glad I live in rural America and intend to do so. I enjoy uncapping a few rounds at a target in my backyard as does my LEO neighbor.

Four deaths per day is double the newly downward revised Covid death toll for Alameda county’s 1.6~ Million residents.

So exactly what is the pandemic?

Just sayin....

I have lived in California all my life.......66 years......and lately I have watched it circle down the toilet. Just how did this happen? It is not hard to figure out. And to think I was stupid enough to think elected officials were there to help the people.....silly me.
Me too. I gave up on those bastards years ago. They don't fix problems, the ARE problems no matter which side they're on. And it's worse here in the Peoples Republic of California with only one party.

Both Oregon and Washington are clearly one party with a party banner of "spend and spend more". I'm glad I'm old enough that I wouldn't see were this will end. When I was growing up this is how I saw or remember how community problems were being solved so what happened;

Homeless were in two camps the single transient and the hard luck family. ( the transient was picked up by police jailed over night, given a meal or two then escorted out of town. Those hard luck families were handled by church groups that helped them get a job housing or transportation to where they were going.

Fights between kids were face to face fists and wrestling around. And from my own experiences made new friends in the process. Now its kids with guns and parents that don't spend time with their kids or just don't give a shit what their kids are doing.

We respected adults, teachers and especially LEOs. Now kids lack respecting these people and have grown up to impart that same attitude to their kids.

We have made it easier to go into debit both with college loan programs and credit cards. We have forgot about trade jobs as teachers want to drum college into every ones head making it seem that if you don't your dumb. (My kids are educators and have this attitude) Kids start out in life with huge loans and then go deeper in debit with their first home which is now a 3000 sq ft starter home. My wife and I had a single wide for our starter home, but it got us moving forward as homeowners.

I'll be 70 in Oct. So glad I grew up when I did. Got to experience the innocence you wrote of. It was a very different world. Of course there We're disagreements (some large) but seems like now there are fundamental divisions that I don't think will ever be overcome. Hope I'm wrong for my kids sake. It was a lot of fun while it lasted wasn't it?

Yep, no hope for the future.....society is completely lost. You will see areas of like minded people.....and eventually a civil war. The left will prevail. Likely global socialism and a one world govt. Then AntiChrist...then the end, for many.

In 2020, San Francisco had more than double the drug overdose deaths as covid deaths.

Neither number is significant though, since in total they add up to nothing more than a rounding error in that city of 3.3 million.
