Mc weedless swimbait and jerkshad both worked well. Most calicos were 3 to almost 5 pounds.

Biggest one of the night weighed 4 and 3/4 pounds.

Released at the launch after picture.
Quick question, will they find there way back to the wall?

Why bring them back to the launch if you are gonna just take a picture and weigh on a hand scale? Couldn't you do that out at the wall?

    Nice looking fish though!
I usually release them at the wall but my friend wanted to take them this particular night. But he changed his mind last minute and released them at the launch.

Gotcha, makes sense. I thought it was like largemouth fisherman who for whatever reason fill their livewells with their catch just to release em at the bank end of the day. Makes no sense to me if you aren't fishing a tournament.

I noticed the change in the bigger tourneys where they put an official on each boat and weigh and release all fish over 1.5 lbs with no limit or culling...love it..
We handled the release of fish for the del rey bass tourneys way back when..
Let's just say the biggest fish didn't end up at the popular structure..

Seen your reports and know you C&R regularly.

You dictate what happens on your boat. Keep the legals if your keeping and release the big girls, regardless of what your buddy thinks he wants.

Those beauties should have never make it back to the launch, IMHO.

    Calico Police . . . out.

    Addition . . .

Love these. Second video shows a Blue Heeler, just like mine.

As a clarification, the biggest one of the night went straight back in the water at the wall after a quick picture.
The 3 and 4 pounders were kept in the live well because I know my friend likes to take some meat home. However, after I explained how slow growing these fish are, he decided to not keep them and released at the launch.

I rarely take any fish home from the wall..

I’m sure it’ll make its way back. I release a few rat yellowtail in Newport and huntington harbors every summer in hopes that some little kid gets lucky and is able to hook one from the docks or shore. Sometimes we’ve even received tiny ones mixed in as bait from the bait barge.

Saw some tagging studies from freshwater big bass tourneys using both radio tags and recapture tags and it appears they do not return to where they were caught..they slowly dispersed with most remaining in the general area where released..only 1 small mouth was found to have made its way back where it came from and that took 4 months..
They said the fish hugged shoreline and rarely crossed over where the depth was over 65 feet...
Based on the massive sand bass spawning migrations that used to take place here I believe the sand bass move much more than calicos but Norm kagawa swore to me he came across a ball of approximately 500 calicos under a kelp paddy 40 miles offshore so who knows for sure..
