Congratulations on your catch. Before you start moving batteries, figure out why? Some guys have and some have not. So far after having my 216 for 17 years I've seen no reason to do it. One of the first things I would do is check out the condition of the fuel tank. Do a search on Cabo boats, there are several threads here and most likely everything you can think of doing with your boat is posted on one of the threads. Don't forget to check out the trailer too. What motor do you have on the boat?

It has a 91 200hp Yamaha 2 stroke on the back but will eventually repower with a 4 stroke 200.

Best motor ever made right there dude. How many hours?

Any idea what kind of economy you're getting with the 200?

Put up some photos of your boat and the motor
That’s good to hear! I picked up the boat and now I’m away at work for 2 days. Hasn’t been in the water yet. Barely limped her home 50 miles with tires that looked like they would disintegrate if you blew on them! 1300 hours on the meter. Here’s a few photos. I’ll get some more when I get back from work.

I can tell you that when I purchased my 216 from the original owner I prematurely pulled the trigger on replacing the original engine.

The original engine was a Yamaha 175 Precision Blend 2 stroke with 62 original hours. I rebuilt the carbs, replaced filters, changed the impeller and lower unit oil and that thing ran like a dream and looked brand new. Problem was I already purchased the new Honda BF 150.

After doing some research on the original engine I found out many owners getting 5,000 hours on their engines and it is highly desirable by the Mexico panga fleet. I sold the original engine with controls and gages for $3,800 and the guy still runs it today, currently at 450 hours.

Unbelievable dude that is the most beautiful thing I've ever seen. Not a spec of corrosion anywhere. Over 30 years old. Absolute time capsule!

And $3800 with the reservoir and gauges? You gave that thing away WOW! Amazing to think someone score a brand new motor for $4k and will be running that thing for the next 10-15 years...

What you said about the panga fleet is absolutely true. I'm hoping to find out if what you said about the hours is true but I don't think I'll ever be able to put 5000 hours on this thing...

BTW, did it have any stuttering or hitches in the idle? My only complaint about mine is it dies at idle on occassion.

I saw your post @rustman on here a ways back talking about pulling the trigger early. My motor isn’t nearly as clean but I think I will get a lot of life out of it. 1300hrs and looks pretty clean. Going to run it for a few months, do all fluid and filter changes and see how fuel economy is. With gas prices in California, my head will soon implode but, is what it is. Can’t put a price on reliability when you’re on the water. I wish there was a thread of just photos of Cuddycon’s so I can get ideas off what everyone has done. Haha

Hi Jake, if you ever want to chat about the Cabo 216, I'll volunteer. I am the original owner of a Cabo 216 and it's now 35 years old and still going strong. I have done a lot to it and been a lot of places with the Cabo. DM if you want to talk Cabos.

Errin I have owned a lot of 2 strokes. They always seem to have a little hiccup at idle. However this one did not probably because I rebuilt the carbs.

I can guarantee if you always put Soltron fuel additive in your fuel you will probably eliminate that issue.

Whoa. I think I should buy a lottery ticket today. 4 complete sets (inner and outer frames) of Cabo windows plus extras, new old stock. Yes they're scratched from handling over the years but that'll polish out. The plastic is still strong as they were stored in a climate controlled environment. Clear glass though so I may end up swapping mine out.

All extra windows are spoken for.

Has anyone rebuilt their original switch panels? Or know a company that can replicate the original switch panel with the etching of the Cabo Marine logo?
I used new wire marine for mine. They can do custom etching and panels with whatever you want. I just had them build mine to my dimensions with the rockers I wanted and I put it all together

Sooo already time for a repower it looks like…. Started some normal maintenance and as I was changing the thermostats, found 2 sheared bolts on the house that were just held on with gasket maker. So started getting after removing the 2 sheared bolts that were extremely stuck into the head. Ended up shearing off 2 easy out extractors on both holes. So figured, fuck that sucks, I’ll just pull the head and take it to a machine shop and let them toss it on a drill press and get them out and have the head machined. Well, as I was going in the proper pattern to remove the head bolts, lucky number 13 decided she didn’t want to leave and BAM, now I’m holding a sheared head bolt… 🤬 Anyone know if the newer I4 Yamaha 200’s are good for a 226?

Update. Sheared off 4 more head bolts then just threw in the towel. What a great day!

In terms of re-powering, besides money, you will need some patience, as supply-chain issues have constrained the number of available outboards. There are stories boaters needing to waiting until 2023 for motors.

When they do come in, most new outboards go to boat builders, not dealers. You might as well put your name in, pay a deposit and get in line for a new motor.

Meanwhile, it's worth fixing your current engine. Using a "heat wrench" might be the key. It will take some work, but with a shortage of outboards, you have some time.

I realize it's more difficult if not impossible to get the remaining part of the bolts out but would heating them up with a torch help any? If not and your desperate to get out on the water and not catch a fish you're welcome to join me on my 216.

Anytime you have room for one more Mike! I’m dead in the water with this motor right now. I shouldn’t have started messing with shit🤣

Don't regret digging into the motor, it's good to know what shape it's in before you get offshore, unfortunately you got the bad news sooner than later.

Well, got the head off and have 9 sheared head bolts. Moth of them Flush with the power head. And the power head took a beating in the process. Unknown at this point if I’m just going to part out the motor or “attempt” to salvage her. Let me know your thoughts!
