Hoping someone who has built a few tuna rods can help me out. I am building two albacore rods that may also do some lingcod fishing. I have built a few rods before but not an albacore rod. Would like some suggestions on which guides people are using.

I am building two 7' rods, one on a Thrasher MF 70H, and one on a North Fork Composites Pelagic 705-1(SM LMX). I plan on using Winn grips and probably split rear, havent decided on a reel seat yet.

Anyone have thoughts on guides and sizes? Most likely will do 7-8 guides plus tip.

Thanks
Allen

Alps aluminum reel seat and mxn guides. I usually do Something like 20, 16, 12, 10, 10, and finish it with 8’s. Sometimes I’ll go smaller on the guides. North fork should have a guide spacing chart on their website for a good starting point. If you ask @☆THRASHER☆ He Just may Know a thing or 2 about what works well on the thrasher rod.

I like the American Tackle Titanium turbo guides. I’ve built many Super Seekers with them... I like a bigger tip top and guides for knots when casting and reeling...

I fish the Thrasher HTR- 60 for halibut and lingcod that I helped develop. But I typically fish ocean lingcod vs PS. On my Thrasher TR-MF 76H live bait rods I like Alps components and guides. But I don’t build shit. Lol.

Chuck!!! Don’t vigilante my ass if steer you wrong!!

For dual purpose I like the Trasher 7’6” MH...... killer bait stick and I actually use it to crush Hali’s along with lings. I have the 7’ and I use it when need to Roland Martin the tuna in and fun hali stick.

I use 9 guides plus tip top on the 7’ and 11 guides on the 7’6”.

Alps seat and alps titanium guides. Under wrap and main wrap in A thread. If want to Mack them out....Fuji Torzite K guides.

Spacing.....tape guides to rod in good progression to your eye....put reel on and thread line and attach weight and see where line touches blank once bent. Adjust guides to minimize......I use more guides to eliminate blank slap.

Just my opinion.... no on winn grips. They wear out much faster then any other grip. If like the feel....go EVA and Winn wrap tape it. Easy to re wrap when time.

Going to be killer!!!

I just built a TR MF 76 H from thrasher And finished it tonight. It’s a bad ass blank and is great for live bait but you can also go deep for some flatties and lings with it. Light weight and bulletproof. Alps guides and aluminum reel seats so you don’t crack down on a plastic reel seat.

have fun. I’m addicted.

Thanks everyone for the replies and input! Team Sency, South Sounder, what size guides were you guys using?

I'll post up pics of the finished rods.

I have my 4yr son old building his first full size rod while we are all home. He got to pick the components and blank color and we are building it together. I'm calling it an "art" project for home learning.

After making a lot of rods and swearing by aluminum reel seats I converted back to the Fuji composite reel seat. It will out live you and is not going to crack. I’ve caught hundreds of fish on them.

my large rods Super Seek 2X4’s get large reels and are made to catch 200lb plus fish get aftco aluminum reel seats, but for albacore and lincod I just don’t see the need.

the aluminum gets scratches and corrosion. The composite has less issues with wear and tear.

I really like the Winn grip as a foregrip, 10" although Chris whines about it all the time I haven't experienced any problems with wear. I personally use the Alps titanium medium-heavy guides on that blank, #20, 16, 12, 10, 8, 8, 8, 8 plus tip top. It's pretty tough to beat the Alps aluminum seats although Fuji graphite will do fine unless you clamp down too tight on it. I usually put a rubber gimbal on so it locks into the rocket launchers. I don't use win grips below the reel seat cuz they're a little tougher to get in and out of the rocket launcher. Split grip is cool as long as the rocket launcher has a sleeve, otherwise the blank can get gouged up flopping around in it. Check this link out, there's some good rod building tools, including a guide spacing calculator that I use frequently. Always static test to make sure the lines not going to touch the blank.
