I just installed my B175hw. I have a feeling my Garmin 1040xs is not pushing enough power/gain.
No matter what setting auto low/med/or high it is auto user to 98 or 99% gain.
I feel like I should be able to wash out the display with too much gain. At 98% I only have 2% to go.
I would make it worth you time to borrow any comparable Garmin unit before I am forced to buy another one. I am in Oceanside and will drive anywhere reasonable to Make it work.

I run Simrad with my B175 W ducer, so I cannot help you there, but I do agree with your gain at 98%, you will have nothing but interference.

Maybe you have a local electronics installer who has an older Garmin unit you could just test with?

Also you know never to power your ducer on land or you will burn it up? Several people have learned this the hard way.

Thanks Rustman. I spent over an hour on the phone with Garmin. I am going to try a new head unit from Garmin. The tech seems to think something internal is not correct. It appears the 1040xs is pushing about 30% gain even when manually selected to 99%.
Never have I been able to increase the gain to receive a second bottom return. Hopefully the new head unit fixes it!

Why don’t you go to West Marine, purchase a unit, try the unit and see what happens. You can always take the unit back for a full refund.

They don’t sell the unit I have. I should have the new one in a day or 2. If it doesn’t work I’m going with a different brand. The whole package right now is set up with Garmin.
The B175hw should read really well.
