Taking off out of San Diego airport this morning around 11a. On the turn left I notice about 5-6 miles outside the mission beach jetty a large boil. Was probably 100ft in diameter. It was for sure a circular boil not dolphins making a run up the coast. It was static. But full feeding frenzy! I saw a boat full gas heading straight to it as well.
What could that be this time of year that close to shore? Dolphins feeding? No way that's tuna is it? Or? Maybe the one on the boat reads this and chimes in what was going on?

Very good odds that strackle99 called it right. That is classic bonito and mackerel feeding behavior. I've seen that many times.

If you were interested, you could catch a couple and then slow troll about fifty yards away around the school. It is an excellent way to catch mako sharks. They often hang around those feeding schools and pick off stragglers.

I have seen yellowtail in that area boiling this time of year. In fact some of my biggest are late winter surface iron fish. Between mission bay and La Jolla out to 3-4 miles .
Oh man stop you guy’s can talk about it when I get my super panga back!!!
