Heads up to all of the OG fishermen, we just experienced an overnight trip out of a SD landing, we arrived early, and really enjoyed seeing some QUALITY Bluefin being brought in. HOWEVER, if you have not been out in the past few years BEWARE the landing operators have only gotten more greedy and dishonest in the past few years. Prices have increased (to be expected) however the food has decreased in quality and amount, crew attitude is that of doing the passengers a favor, and only the crew have any valid knowledge. Compared to overnight boats and 2 and 3 day trips taken years ago, the OVERALL quality of trips have declined, drastically. We booked an overnight trip, the boat carried more than what was posted for the trip. We motored south through the night, and then carefully trolled an entire day to locate NOTHING,,no blame so far,,,,except we returned to the bio-mass that the 3/4 and day boats were fishing all day while we prospected for the landings more lucrative clients, read multi-day and six-pack quick run charters. We fished a very short window for the SMALLEST YELLOWTAIL(10-12 inch) I have ever seen claimed as a fish caught on purpose. Lots of skipjack, that the crew professed were great eating,,,yeah right. When cleaning the skippies, the meat was so dark as to look unfit for cat food. And the yellowfin were sub sized,,,smaller then the traditional football size. Bear in mind, our boat traveled the entire day without another boat in sight,,,so the radio comms did not mention any fish found by other boats??????Not like a radio group could not relay location of schools willing to bite????? Yeah all the newbies were all excited about the great fishing,,,wonder how long till they figure it out? The size of fish being caught were such that we OG fishers would have reeled in and went looking again for real fish, but the LANDING OWNERS SET THE POLICIES OF LANDING BOATS.
Also of note,,we were told," the fleet no longer does "jackpots" as it may detract from the "fun",,, thanks to our newer millennial snowflake fishing companions.
So before rolling the dice on an open boat,,BE AWARE Book with a boat you have fished before,,try to charter with the boats directly and not run by a large company that outright LIES, and shows NO REGARD for the RESOURCE or SUSTAINABILITY. When I shared this with the landing, their concern was enforcing" covid virus" guidelines on the boat. NOTHING WILL IMPROVE,,until WE SPEND OUR MONEY WITH THE BOATS,,NOT THE LANDING OWNERS

Skipjack is awesome if you bleed and chill right away. You should post your specific landing and boat instead of bringing all of them down and lumping them together. Maybe your trip was a one off. It sucks but shit happens. Help others by supporting different boats

That sounds like a shitty experience. Not sure what boat/landing this was but I have had nothing but good times driving down for trips on the Pacific Queen. Great crew/captain and I was never disappointed with the food or the people managing the landing. One skunk on one trip, tons of driving and only 7 BFT 20-30lbs for 30ish people, but it wasn’t their fault.

I love these guys . He just joined Bloodydecks yesterday and this is his one and only post and he proceeds to tell everybody how the entire San Diego sportfishing fleet is horrible and greedy based on one trip. These posts are like a drive by shooting. You join BD for one day, fire a few shots at a boat or landing then disappear.

I agree, but more than likely he created a new account instead of getting flamed on his normal one lol

So the skipper spends the day prospecting trying to find a good grade of fish and at the end joins the fleet to put some fish on the boat and this guys complaining. He could of saved fuel and parked it on the dink honey hole with everyone else and called it good. Every trip is a roll of the dice, it's the effort that counts. OP should take up shuffle board or something
If you choose a boat based on $ be prepared for lower quality food etc. That's the way it works

I would recommend buying a boat. Once you do you will realize how fn hard it is to find and catch fish. I know many guys who bought boats, didnt catch shit for a few years, and then sold.

If they'd have gone to the place with the tiny fish you'd of posted that they were parked in the nursery killing babies instead of looking for real fish. Ya know, some people would complain about being hung with a new rope.

" LANDING OWNERS SET THE POLICIES OF LANDING BOATS "
This is not true.

We have seen the fleet get better and better over the years.

Some people just shouldn't take up the sport of fishing. If you don't understand that some days you catch, some days you don't and we can only catch what's there, then find another pastime.

Hmmm, are you saying that party boat "fishermen" are akin to taking kids to Happy Jack's Fish Farm to go fishing?

Funny story, I have a friend who thought he and his brother were the crap when it came to fishing. They only rode charters. One day they pair up and join Freedom Boat Club and think they are going to slay it. He starts calling me for spots, fishing tips and then we have a heart to heart... he never really knew how to "fish" and he is now getting a fast education on how to read water, current, find spots and find fish. Humbling experience for sure.

I still don’t understand the title. Sounds like fishing to me. But then again I eat skippies, so what do I know?

What I do know is there’s never any left when I serve it. Although I did watch one marlin aficionado try and cough and gag after wolfing down a bunch of aku sashimi; passing on the albie, yft, yt, and bft sashimi.

oh boy. My last trip we spent all day going over acres and acres of BFT. I totally blamed the Capt because they would not bite. I ignored the fact he drove all day, glassed all day, his crew was up in the rafters all day. I ignored the fact he stopped and threw bait on schools 10 times. I ignored all his radio conversations I could hear when I was up on the bow.

Man I had a great time on the water, it was blue water, life everywhere, fresh air, food was decent. How can you screw up a Breakfast Sandwich or Burger right?

When I got back we got 2 fish for the whole trip. Not even a bite. I bought 3 tickets and took my son in law. He had a great time.

As we walked to the truck there were 300 people standing there going out that night.

Think you were one of them.
