Has anyone noticed the huge rate hike in BoatUS's insurance. My renewal is $830 a year, which is up $300 from last year. I called State Farm for a quote and they gave me a premium of $289. I called BoatUS and they told me the California tax increase is the issue.

BoatUS have been good to me, but I'm thinking of switching. Anyone got any input?

I renewed just before summer and it was the same price as the previous year. Except I got some little discount for being claim free or something.

I am interested to hear what others have to say.

My insurance went up $400.00 to renew. I was told that everyones insurance would be going up significantly, if you live in California or Florida. I'm looking around now for cheaper insurance.

Exactly what I was told. I don't mind a rate increase, but this is ridiculous!

I requested a quote from Sea Insure ... we'll see!

Mine went up from too $440 to $789 with boat u.s. I was told the same about the clownifornia tax. Got a quote from Guico and it was slightly higher then boat u.s.

Just to share my experience - I signed up for a year with them in May, was a fair price then. I was also able to get them to package vessel assist for just $70. That was what made the deal for me, since vessel assist is pretty much 100% required in California.

I'll have to see what they raise my rate to next year. I hope I don't have to go to another service and pay the full price for vessel assist.

If you time it right you can get it at a discounted rate at the PCS festival and Fred Hall.

I've used their insurance for the last 16 years and when I asked if they could reduce the rate they told me I'd have to reduce my coverage to do so. I'm not sure what discount they give at a trade show, but I'm sure it's not much, if at all ... and then you'd get hosed on your renewal, anyway ... Not worth it!

I was talking about the vessel assist part, I got like $50 off. I don't remember the exact amount but it was pretty decent.

Not sure why everything has changed but I can tell you this. I ended up with a $400 discount based on no claims and the exact same policy as my pervious one. However, my friend wasn't so lucky he ended up with an $800 increase with no claims.
Not sure why changes have been so random with Boat US changing from Fireman's fund to Geico but I know that all the companies have been receiving A LOT of calls and complaints.
I imagine this thread will be VERY interesting over the next 30 days.

My boat is 24 ft and mine more than doubled. I switched to AAA and told them to go pound sand.
