Hey everyone, I’m not sure if you have heard or not but there’s been some word about bluefin being around our waters right now, if anyone has any word about seeing them or what class they are it would be greatly appreciated if you would spread the news!

A crew of big wave surfers went to the cortes last month and got epic waves but also reported “lots of fish”, no idea what type though, based on the area it’s very possible they were bft

I talked with someone on FB who reported they had been out to Tanner and Cortez recently and saw no tuna signs, but you know everything people say on FB is true LOL

Stab Magazine reports on 16 January 2023:

“At one point, a big shark came up and bit a tuna in half right next to us,” remembered Garret. “The water safety was talking about big fish — I didn’t even wanna go look. “

They are always on the tanner Cortez area but not always up foaming or in the same areas as the early season these fish are usually smaller ones that like to eat squid they are still there but that isn’t worth the drive for 20-50 lb tunas and rockfish is closed so no backup plan is a bad idea…

Sounds like I'm going out to Cat tomorrow and we'll be on the lookout. Hope to come back with some bragging but not getting my hopes up. I love catching bonito too and the offshore ones are usually the bigger models, so that's good fun for me. Could just be dolphin out there too for all I know

There was some plane dope on Facebook of some foamers out of DP a week or two ago. One moth prior there was some talk about them off Palos Verde. No doubt in my mind there are some schools of BFT cruising around crushing massive swarms of bait. If they run in these temps back east, there is no reason they wouldn't do it here. It's a shame fishdope doesn't run random hot laps once a month in the winter and spring for this exact reason. It seems like they wait until there are fish everywhere to fly around looking for them only if someone already flew around successfully before them. I don't think I could look anyone in the eye if I ran a business and only did things when they were convenient for me and that benefit me before my customers.

So you're telling me they're already in the Catalina Channel?
from JD's Big Game Tackle - Fish Report:

"San Clemente Island looks open for the weekend-- several boats out the harbor today to Catalina-- dark of the moon should help in making squid and should be those halibuts in the shallows, bonito off Pebbly Beach and there was a report of a school of tuna seen mid channel ( why not) Have a great weekend-- JD"

this all sooo dumb. There's not any foaming schools of tuna in US waters. There are a lot of whipped up fishermen all circle jerking to the same 1 or 2 reports. Instagram and tackle shop talk converge to spread this type of bullshit. One or two people were in planes at 5,000 feet over a pod of surface active dolphin and calling it tuna foamers. Until someone who actually knows what they are looking at (Carl @ airpilikia) or we see a cell phone video from a boat this is all just fishful thinking.
