I used to live in Winchester Bay. I was fishing with a local guide Bob Cobb long before he was a guide. Truck driver he was.
We’d fish early August through about now and Believe it or not we’d have the river to ourselves.
By the 10th of August we were getting 2-3 stud fish a trip up around the point in the river. Above marker 12.
Roughly 1993. Guaranteed a limit of fish in the Gardiner channel come Sept 1. By Sept 25th, we were drifting in front of the elk refuge casting spinners absolutely whacking the Coho.
Great fishery. My mom still lives in Reedsport, would love to get back and fish that river.
My wife worked at Salmon Harbor Cafe in the mid 80’s on the 4am shift. Numerous charter boats doing multiple trips a day whacking fish.
Damn shame it’s a 4 Wheeler vacation destination now.
