i picked up some black metallic alps thread. I’d like to do some black dragon scales on my rewrapped seeker 6480. Curious if anybody has tried to do the same. Any insight would be great thanks.

GM dragon scales are awesome! Im sure JT has a pic of a black metallic ds somewhere...
    I would agree, won't stand-out much...
Ive seen people burnish it to death so where the metallic black meets the underwrap / edges will be metallic silver...

It sort of works but not nearly as well as most other metalics. The key to the dragon scale is the the difference in shade between the scales at different angles, but you can’t pick up the shading on the black well.
I used Bill’s picture to quickly and crudely illustrate what I mean:

If it was black, all 4 shades would be just black.

I seem to recall someone on this forum wetting the wrap with acetone followed by heavy burnishing to get a pretty good dragon scale effect.

Maybe I’ll rethink my approach. Try it on some scrap blank first. I’d like to stick to my black and white theme. I will be doing fade wraps over the scales anyhow. I’m wondering if using a thicker diameter mono under the metallic thread will create a more exaggerated affect.

You use mono under wrap for dragonscale? Never would have figured that, learn something everyday!

It actually makes more sense than thread. Whatever thread is used, will have a texture to it. By using A for the wrap over the layout threads,(for the best contrast and shadows) it can get caught in the texture. That makes burnishing more tricky. Mono is smoother. Or at least ought to be. ;)

Been using double E for the layout, the metallic bites into it pretty good. I spend more time packing it so there's hardly any gaps, burnishing metallic is a bitch. I'd imagine using heavier mono depending on the size of the diamond?

Did the black Alps mettalic thread work out?
In a nutshell.... No. Metallic from any source is still metallic. It just looks black.

I use the same metalic thread to form the small diamond patterns and it come out very defined every time..

By using the same metallic thread you use to wrap with to bring out the scale
Pattern rather than mono. Like peviously mentioned.. i had thought about it as well.
    does this satisfy the court???😎

mono under the DS…. hmmm to create even greater contrast. I will have to attempt thanks for the tip.

I typically use spectra from left over spools.

black ds is awesome in the sunlight. that’s where it really pops.
