Yeah, it does not look thin in the pic, and tape measures are generally more accurate than scales. Even average thickness and your fish should be over 30 lbs at that length. But I have seen some very weird skinny long Halibut before. The fish in my avatar is only about 46" and 45 lbs. Still a nice fish you got either way!

My wife's two PB were right at 48" and weighed 37#.

I would have swore gaffing and dragging them in boat, they were over 40# easy....

But like you say I'm not complaining about something like that coming up next to the boat.

A 48" would not be even close to a upper class 30 lb. fish, even if it was the skinniest one you have ever seen. A 48" fish is upper 40ties into the 50ties. As Greg said the measurements tell the story. After 45" halibuts weight is increasing 5 lbs. per every inch and it only goes up from there.

Well shit I must have missed by 10lbs or so, even better. My math sucks but I can read a tape measure. I finally believe IT WAS bigger than posted....lol

Great post, thanks for the story and the great photo. Reminds me of a write up from an outdoor writer, years ago: "why, with 5K in tools, do I still fix the trailer, with a big stick-and a rock?"

Randal, I have seen the chart and it works... mostly.

The link has pics, it was weighed at Dana landing and I measured it.
