Haven't posted for a while because there's been nothing but bass to report on. Yesterday (7/30) I was going to head to Catalina but turned left out of Huntington Harbor instead and tried the Newport Pipe. It was a good move. Fishing was great, weather was perfect, and I was alone all morning. Arrived 0800 and left 1230.
Anchored up at about 60' (top of pipe) and it was a consistent bite on ordinary-size calicos & sandies for a couple hours. At least 20, I should get a clicker. Then trolled along the pipe for an hour searching for something besides bass, caught nothing but a lone mack. Switched back to bass rigs and drifted over the pipe at about 100' top depth, near a couple of old floats. There were big bass here. I caught a PB calico (6 lb 5 oz on my digital scale), a 5lb 3 oz sandie, and a 4 lb 8oz sandie. Didn't need to anchor, the west wind had come up and it exactly cancelled the 1 knot uphill current; drifts were almost standstill.
I experimented with different artificials, but all bass were caught on Kman 4" red flake swimbaits except 6" for the big bass and one calico on a spinnerbait. The fish were super aggresive and really tore up the plastics, I'll need to order more. All fish released but brought home 2 balloons.
Got absolutely drenched in the Cobia CC 220 on the way back, quartering into whitecaps. Good thing the water was warm (74-75)!
