Might actually help ucla in the long run...
If he has a borderline one and done year this could keep him from being drafted high and he might stay in school..
    Pretty obvious he needs too..

Who said anything about making up a statute or taking away a scholarship? I simply implied the label fits and made no reference to punishment.

“ they need to be taught” what, not to steal stuff? Shouldn’t take eighteen years to learn that. Sounds like they will now be taught something about Chinese law. I’m thinking they would be better served learning that in a classroom here in the stats than in a jail cell in China.

Concur with your first sentence, but it is not my bar to set as I do not know the Ball family. That bar needed to be set by his dad and family along time ago.

Spot on assessment and in fact it may have already helped them. Sounds like they were released on bail, which is unusual in that country from what I read.

As a UCLA alum, I would rather see UCLA in the bottom 20 and have quality student athletes. Winning with low character “students” is not worth it. UCLA should not sink to the depths of U of Miami, SEC, etc.

If they haven't learned by college that it is wrong to steal, slapping their hands (probably for the tenth or hundredth time) isn't going to teach them.

Suspending them 5 to 10 games for this would be more than a slap on the wrist .. my understanding is that one of them stole one pair of sunglasses ..
Without knowing all the facts such as did they all know it was happening (which is no excuse legally) or many other possibilities ..
People do stupid shit all the time and don't lose life opportunities because of it ... if that was your first offense on something like this the legal penalty here at home would of be next to nothing..
However the embarrassment as well as the the possible loss of millions by not being drafted because of it will be over their head...

These "gentlemen" are grown men acting like ugly American tourists. I don't know all the facts but I can pretty much guarantee that they have been coddled for doing things like this in America a time or five in the past. They are guests in another country rep'ing you. "Stealing" has no qualifier as to what got stolen.

I was just thinking about the teen that got caned for vandalism in singapore in the early 90's and was wondering about chinas punishments.

Wow ,if you believe that 18 year old freshman who can't even go into a bar or casino or strip club and I think can't even buy a cigarette or a beer are grown men and fully developed then we come from two different worlds..
And guaranteeing that all of them have stolen in the past without any evidence of any kind is pretty wild...
They are kids ... being eligible for a non exsistant draft doesn't make them men...
I'm not excusing the behavior but there are plenty of pro athletes who are men who have done way worse and continued on with their life successfully without further incident ...

Think I screwed this up, was replying to the one you replied to, but, here it is.

Have you been on campus at UCLA? Chinese nationals compete heavily for an opportunity to get into that university and pay the out of country/out of state tuition.

That and basketball is one of the most popular sports in China, combined with a hyper popular school, good for business.

I am going to pass on investment in Ball Bail Bonds. That 99.2% conviction rate scares me into thinking too many folks will try to skip out.

EXACTLY, I am raising my kids to be adults one day, not in 20 years or 25, but sooner rather than later. If true, this is not something you would see a well rounded, mature, adult do. Especially a mature man who understands the context of their actions and the affect it will have on those who depend on them, IF TRUE.

Responsibility. We wouldn't be making excuses if it was some tweeker who took our pancake air compressor out of our truck at three in the morning.

If anything, the more you are given, the more is expected of you.
