Who are you Favorites and Why? What besides the requisite great daily counts makes them your top choice?

I like Tara/ Taro, the capt of the Liberty. Not only does he give 110% effort to put you on fish (many others do as well) but mostly because he constantly keeps you informed. On many boats you never really know what's up, everyone just scrambles when the engines shut down. Taro lets you know what he sees before you stop. He tells you the type and grade of fish he suspects, the target depth, and advises on gear selection. Basically I think he just communicates more than the others.

I've only had the pleasure to fish with him once, but I really dig Jim Hughes, aka Rambo's styles. Little rough around the edges, but has a great sense of humor and a good fish or bust style. Purposely avoids rat yellow kelps (pulled the trollers out before we got them).

Captain Mikey of the Relentless. Fishes hard, contagious enthusiasm, lots of feedback on conditions & don't be surprised when you are hooked up and he right at your elbow.

Like guys that run from Rat YT. It is a crime in my mind to put YT the size of trout on a Sportboat.

There are so many, for 3/4 day I agree with Taro but don't discount Ryan on the San Diego either. For overnight/ 1 1/2 days I'm a big fan of John Contiff on the islander, drew card on the PQ, Markus on the NLO, can't go wrong with Alan Fey on the El Cap. Had many a great trip with Capt. Ron Baker on the Point Loma. I'm heading on a six day on the Vagabond this fall and have heard nothing but good about Mike Lackey. Will report. Had some good times with Sean Trobridge on the Legend when he ran it. Can't go wrong on most of the boats that run regularly out of SD

Keeping this to 1 to 3 day sport boat captains. Not long range nor skiff captains.

Most in San Diego are very good. The top of the heap IMO are:

    Gavin Harbour/Drew Card- Pacific Queen

    Pat Cavanaugh- Pacific Dawn

    Jason Rambotis- Pegasus

    Alan Fay- El Capitan

    Markus Medak- New Lo Ann

    Mark Ornoz- Pacific Voyager

    Jodie Morgan/Travis Vaughn- Apollo

    Jim Hugh Cortez

    David Ikeda- Endeavor

Why this group........They catch the most fish year in and year out!

    Mark Oronez-Pacific Voyager....constant updates thru-out the trip!
Cary Dodson-Success....Pt. Loma Sportfishing, fishy guy with humor.
Tucker McCombs-Outrider.... 22nd street Landing, has that it factor.

Greg Gawitt on the Aztec.Usually puts you on fish. Keeps you pumped.
Markus on the new lo-an. Big game type captain. Quality over quanity. Does whatever it takes. Flys kites etc to get the better fish.

Captain Allen Watson hands down is the all around best captain that I've fished with and I have fished a bunch of them young and advanced he has it in his blood knowing everything little thing there is plus his instinct he is #1 in among southern California top captains.Dreamer charters out of pierpoint landing in Long Beach Ca.Anybody that knows the sport fishing fleet should know where I'm coming from hes in a league of his own.If one has the chance to fish with this legend dont f..k up and miss the trip.he's also a really cool person.

I'll second fishing with Tucker. Great everything aboard that outfit. He puts you on the fish for sure and doesn't waste any time.

Hands down, the best captains on the Commander boat. That boat never comes up empty and is very fishy.
