From an unbiased opinion. The Longfin in Orange and Sav-On Tackle in Sante Fe Springs have the best selection I have ever seen. Freshwater and Saltwater and misc. freaking everything. I would say they are 1a and 1b.

Melton International is a high end saltwater tackle shop for sure. Not a great variety on lures or anything. Melton has alot of high end reels and rods. I live down the street from it.

There is a cool old school shop in LB on Anaheim Blvd. next to Joe Josts. Can not think of the name. Anyone ?

Also a good shop on PCH in Seal Beach. Also can not think of the name. Anyone? This shop has good deals on rods at the Fed Hall show usually. Also great intel on the local surf fishing and live smelt., e.t.c..

Best shark fishing intel I ever got was at Charkbait in HB. Cool little shop.

I may to stop buy Taka's for a browse and buy !!! Never been there. Man my wallet is itching.

Want to make bait and keep it alive? Pacific Edge on Edinger in HB is the place to go. Very knowledgeable dudes there. If you can get them to share WSB or Halibut intel. take notes!!!

The Longfin in Orange. Great group of knowledgable guys and selection. Meltons is too expensive. Their target market is the international angler with alot of money that will have it shipped. Not much of a local selection.

Anglers Center in Newport beach is a good shop as well.

My Vote is Longfin! Went to Meltons A ways Back and asked for a fishing License and they said they dont carry them and that said they ship most stuff to Florida? Its been a while so this may have changed. Eric is the Manager at the Longfin and he's always got time for you without attitude.Good Luck!
no we dont do liscences, and our katella location does 99% walk in business
the catalog shop on state college (not a walk in) is where we ship everything from and that goes worldwide not just florida.

Meltons is exxxxxxxspensive! Jorge the statement about a big dick contest shows that you have no class as and Meltons has very little class for having you as an employee. Longfin off chapman and the 55 is an excellent tackle store, a tad bit exspensive but excellent people. Chark Bait is an all around excellet tackle store with great people and prices located at Heil and Bolsa chica in HB. Big Fish in Seal Beach is another good place, not so much tackle as really good people. There are actually quite a few good ones in Orange County. Good luck in your search.

If he wants to look at a lot of tackle (an a whole lot more), just take him to the Bass Pro Shop. From Anaheim or LA, you can be there under an hour.

I know the demograhic Meltons targets. The only way the prices may be better is with the employee discount.

The local target here in SoCal is not their forte. You know that most of the business is big game tackle for billfish. Just look through the lures section on the website.

youre right on the money, but if you pick up the phone you'll see that we'll match anyone else's advertised price.

longfin, anglers center, taka etc. all great shops run by good people. we have no hatred for anyone else in the business. everyones trying to make a living.

Lot's of great shops, but I would definitely recommend a visit to the Longfin. Very competitive pricing, and will match advertisers pricing, so how can you lose? What I like best about the Longfin? They don't loss leader you in with a rod/reel etc, then gouge you on terminal tackle. Pricing is fair all around the shop.

Been tempted to stay out of this one <g> But they are all great. Meltons can be kinda awe inspiring upon 1st. visit as most lures are bigger than the local rockfish.
But I bought all my rods there my 1st. year (10) and they were the only ones willing to say, "You Don't Need That" as for hooks, line and just general stuff Taka's while not as outgoing has the best prices I have ever found.
Eric at Longfin is a wealth of info and will probably get my 870 2spd. sale. The guys at Baja are also very cool and have great sales.
That little place near the diagonal N. of the LongBeach airport is like going back in time.
We are very fortunate as Florida does'nt even have close to the choices we have locally.
I can only think of 2 places I won't stop and I won't bother to mention them.
My job takes me from Corona to Laguna to the Valley almost daily and since I'm self employed I see a tackleshop and I can't pass without going in.

Thanks guys, K-Mart it is!

Sorry.... Ok, so it sounds like Longfin would be one of the top picks (talk to Eric), Taka's in the running, Charkbait, and of course Melton's if I want to argue about anything and everything or if I want to see some big shiny spendy teasers. As well as a few other local stores like Fisherman's Hardware and Sav-on. And make the drive to Bass-Pro if I want to do the big-box Cabelas like experience. (We were at Cabelas up towards Seattle last week, so probably looking for the salt water specialist rather the the sporting goods generalist.)

I appreciate the intel.

All of the shops recommended are worth visiting, but the only one i would drive out of my way to visit is Bass Pro Shops. You can see tackle anywhere, by it cheaper online anywhere. A special trip to Bass pro Shops is a different experience. They stock way more tackle then any retail store mentioned, and the prices are generally lower on most things. Ive been surprised recently at some of the newer innovative salt water tackle that BPS carries. They carry alot more cool stuff than people know and if they dont have the item, chances are they have a close alternative that will do the same job, probably lower priced. Price Price Price.

I vote the Longfin. They might not have every single item, but they have a great selection, and it's the stuff that works. The only thing I don't like about Taka's is the limited amount of plastics. Melton's is nice too, but I have to say they have the higher end pricey stuff.

All these replies about shops in OC, don't any of you represent BD with a sticker on your car/truck? I drive the 55/22/57 all the time and never see any BD stickers, oh I get the salute, but no sticker.
