The nice thing also is that now we have some lower $$$ options that are also great quality and won't break down on you. The Penn Fathom series being one example along with the Andros reels by Okuma or Toriums by Shimano. Just because something isn't the most expensive in its class doesn't mean it is crap.

The new torium 20 hga and a phenix black diamond 809 rod. That's my 40# setup. Reel I found for $216 rod for $260.

I had a lot of shite gear growing up, too. Without thinking about it I tossed stuff that failed and kept stuff that held up...over many decades. As I look at my quiver of multiple rigs now (local freshwater, LR, etc) every rig is a Shimano reel with the exception of one Avet. The drag's a little wonky on my Avet but it's done pretty well. I noticed it about a year ago when I stepped back and looked and made that realization - almost all Shimano. Go figure. Not cheap, though...and I had one Shimano burn up in battle.

I think this rod and reel thread is like all things in life the guys who can afford the mega cab diesel are going to tell you that's the only tuck that will tow a trailer, when in reality all that was needed was ford ranger. I like all the post even the suggestion of tallica's and super seekers which would run well into the 800 dollar range. Awesome advice from everyone (thank you) I think I have made my mind up based upon this thread. Calstar and fathoms

only thing I would add is to pull hard on the rods you are considering...I no longer own any 7' rods except for 15/20# rigs...6 1/2" or 6' just fit me better...sort of like asking "what handgun should I buy?"...get the one that fits your hand and points where you are looking ;)

$400 is a bit of a squeeze. 700m with a talica 12 would be the one but not for $400. Stick with the 700m and put a torium 20 on it for now
